Hi
I’m looking to get myself an ND1. What should I be looking out for on these? I love my NC1 but fancy the new shape.
Cheers all

Hi Matt,
I bought my 2017 ND (rag top) in March 2022 with 12k miles on the clock. It’s now covered 60k miles and has been amazing! Within 12 months I had the tell tale knocking from the rear and it cost me (last December) £385 for all 4 new rose bushes on the rear. Local garage charged me £150 to fit them. I’d be looking for a FSH (Mazda ideally), watch for the stone chips on the front/wings as our NDs really attract them. Apart from the usual things to look out for, they’re a good, solid and reliable beast and when treated well (I do an oil change every 6k and full service at 12k), they’re fantastic to own/drive. I also clean out the rain holes/filter under the hood every 6 months and have never had any ingress of water. Good luck and enjoy!
If you okay with assessing a car, ND’s are down to £7k on the private market.
There are a lot of 1500cc cars about with high mileage.
Some peeps think this model is pretty good, rather than just the model for poor people.
Around 2015 at the change from NC to ND, the latter often looks the better deal now.
Just random thoughts but I think there are some 1.5 models that have a good history but low prices out there.
I missed one yesterday!,
Not the nicest and glad you’ve got it sorted.
Can you recall how many miles were on it, approximately, before the sound of doom started? I noticed you said you had it about 2.5 years ago on 12K miles, but now has 60K miles. So maybe the knocking came about 40K miles (on the ND) in?
Agree on the FSH but I’d be less concerned about it all being with Mazda on a car that could be coming up to 10 years old. There are good specialists out there and as long as everything is getting done according to time and/or mileage (e.g. gearbox and diff oil changes) then I don’t see an advantage in the car seeing a main dealer.
Yeah, first felt the tell-tale knocking at around 40k, got around to having them changed last December on 47k. Made such a difference losing the knock but also, felt tighter on bends, especially uneven ones.
My 2018 car (bought by me in March 24) started knocking in August at 30k miles. It’s in today for new bushings at a local mechanic. £300 for the set plus whatever the mechanic charges me.
I’ve spent a few quid on new tires and official factory car play. Otherwise it has had two oil changes (one when I bought it and another after 7500 miles I put on it) and had had rear discs and pads due to corrosion on the inside disc face.
I love the thing and after today I am hoping it is routine maintenance only for the next few years at least.
Lots of ND1’s 1.5 bought as a cheap daily drives so high mileage. I drove one today at nine years old and 70ish miles. Probably £6.5.K. That’s an excellent deal given the pleasure of driving it. Add another 2k if you want a three month warranty if you buy from a dealer.
