Luggage boot rack

We are thinking of getting  a luggage boot rack with the suction cups for travelling through France.

anyone have one, or have any views?

Thanks,

My views, they are noisy, ruin the air flow and block your rear view.

We do 2 weeks touring in Europe with everything in the boot, have done in MK1, MK2 and MK3.

Would also say the suction cap fitment may not be too secure.

Hi Nick and Jane. Were you camping? Not sure we’d get the tent etc in.

thanks

Did you ever get a boot rack and try it out?  If so, how was it.  Noisy?  Rear View?  Any boot lid damage?  Secure?

I am thinking of getting a Revo Rack with the action cups too.

I bought a Mazda boot rack from Bourne Road Mazda years ago, well worth the money. It fixes (securely) to the boot lid, and is neither noisy, nor does it obscure rear view vision unless it’s loaded, when even a spare tire on the boot lid (some do this btw) will obscure rear view. Easy enough to install, or remove, and far safer than anything with suction cups holding (?) it on to the lid. Driving on the right - with a R/H drive car just means placing your faith on both side mirrors, if adjusted properly, not a problem. Been to France three times with it, more mileage there than in most years in the UK, luggage steady as a rock. A good well mounted rack will take up to 22Kg - that’s official, in the owners handbook. It also went on for several National Rallies, as my role at one point meant staying for more than one night.

I wouldn’t trust suction cups as far as I could throw them, for what’s it’s worth.

No rack comes with luggage straps, but Halfords sell some for what seems a small amount, and my pockets are as tight as the proverbial Ducks - - - -_. Just make sure they are the long ones.
MX5 Parts also sell this rack these days. Other members will suggest cheaper versions, but you get what you pay for, and the Mazda rack is quality.

Hi!

Thanks for your reply to this post. For our France trip (next week- yey!) we decided to go ‘rackless’ , ditch the camping and stay in cheap hotels and b&bs. Clearly my husband won’t need much luggage

This is something we will definitely look  at for the future though, so thanks for the tips. We love camping and a shame to use the big car and miss out on the fun of the mx (Mabel).

Cheers

Watch out for that mid-day sun! We got stuck in a motorway traffic jam on the way back from Spain two years ago and sheltered in the shade of all the wagons n lorries as we pottery up the road on the hard shoulder at the same speed as the jam. You’ll only need a couple of pairs of budgie smugglers and a bikini or two, so what are you worrying about a boot rack for? Have fun! Driving in France is ACE! I bet you won’t see any other 5’s that Brit ones though!

Cheers!

Thanks Russ,

Well that’s hubby’s luggage sorted then ??!

yeah, bit worried about that midday sun, have got UVF scarf and hat. We are both fair skinned and freckled ?? might have to resort to top on and A/C … oops did I say that out loud?

Car serviced (thanks https://www.mx5heaven.co.uk/ ), cleaned and ready for the Spanish/French roads ???.

Still haven’t bought one, so interested how the suction cups hold out??. New style in this months STHT mag. Looks functional …

however, I’m more of a basket on the bike rather than pannier person… so the old style rack looks nicer… ( that said, I use a pannier ?? !!)
