Lumpy idle

  1. My model of MX-5 is: ND 2015 1.5.
  2. I’m based near: __Cornwall
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: during idle, there is a slight ‘clunk’ and then a ‘missed beat or 2’ approx every 10 seconds. Then all is normal until the next one!
Only just bought it and love it.
    Many thanks.

Air-con clutch kicking in briefly for a pressure top-up?

Oh, ok. Is that normal, or does the aircon need a proper top up?
Thank you.

No, that is how our aircon works normally, it only asks for the compressor when necessary to make more cold (chill top up, not gas top-up!). Much of the time chilling is not needed so clutch is not engaged on the compressor. This saves us fuel, and allows us to leave Climate Control set on Auto and a given cabin temperature (21C my choice) all year round.

As well as in the cabin, there is another sensor on the evaporator (chiller), and if that warms a bit too much to cool the cabin then the compressor kicks in (clunk) and it takes a bit of extra power from the engine. This extra is quite a lot compared to tick-over but not much compared to normal running on the road.

In short: If it produces cooler air when you ask for it, it is working OK and does not need more gas.

Thank you very much.
