Magnetic drain plug sizes

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 2.0
  2. I’m based near: Leatherhead
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: drain plug sizes

Hi all, I can’t find what size the gearbox (6 speed) and diff (2.0 so LSD) oil drain plugs are. Not the head size, the thread size.
I want to replace with new magnetic plugs, and would either go with OEM, or Goldplug. If anyone knows what the Goldplug ref numbers are, that would be awesome. I can only find numbers for the engine sump plug.

Thanks.

Have the originalmagnets worn?

Yes, when I did all the fluids three months ago the magnets were almost powerless, and the engine one didn’t have a magnet.
I have messaged MX5PARTS and will paste their answer here for the next person.

Fast customer service from MX5PARTS as always…
I will get the gearbox and different plugs ordered from them, and get a Goldplug for the engine from Bofi.

"Hi,

The engine sump drain plug for the Mk3 is here: https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/sump-plug-mk3-35-p-2308.html

It’s not a magnetic plug, Mazda only supply a plain plug for the engine sump. I assume that the oil filter gets rid of any particles and they reckon you don’t need a magnetic plug. We don’t have an aftermarket magnetic plug available.

The drain plugs for the gearbox and diff do have magnets.

We don’t stock the gearbox drain plug. We can get it from Mazda usually within 14 days as long as Mazda have the part in stock.

The price of the plug is £18.07 including VAT. Our part number is SP2920.

If you’d like to order the gearbox plug, you would need to telephone your order in to us and ask for the part number because the plug is not on our website.

The magnetic drain plug for the Mk3 diff is the same as the earlier models. It’s on our website here: https://www.mx5parts.co.uk/gearbox-differential-magnetic-drain-plug-mk1-25-p-846.html

So I am still waiting for the magnetic plugs. I got a new diff plug from MX5PARTS but the magnet is dead. At least I could measure it and now know it is an M18 , 1.5mm thread, 12mm depth. So I have ordered a Gold Plug from ECP, which has now been shipped to Italy by DHL (argghhhh!!!)

I am waiting for a new Mazda special order plug from MX5PARTS, but as it is special order, don’t know the lead time.

Really want to have a fresh oil change before going away on a 2000 mile jaunt from Friday.

Does anyone know the size of the gearbox plug, 6speed, mk3. If so I will get a gold plug ordered up in case the Mazda one doesn’t appear in time.
I have seen it said it takes an M18 washer, but it must be a different size from the diff as they are different part numbers.

Can anyone help with sizing or point me in the direction of a tech spec gearbox drawing?

I am on the verge of dropping the oil and measuring the plug, but just know I will end up not being able to get a new one in time.
