Manifold and remap

Hiya allĀ

I’m planning on having my 2.0 NC fitted with a performance manifold and a remap

I see that manifold options seem to be racing beat, IL Motorsport and bbr.Ā  Is there any real difference between these?Ā Ā

Thanks peopleĀ

Interesting question so if anyone else has a similar idea, heres’s my twopennyworth. Not a great deal of difference between the three systems and pricing, I chose BBR because I used to live nearby and they have a good reputation. I also thought the finish and pipe run was my favourite.

Nothing against IL Motorsport who are the cheapest, especially if you use a MX5parts discount period, I have had an IL Motorsports back box which was lovely on the standard manifold but a bit ā€œasboā€ with the free breathing BBR manifold, ended up going for a Moss Cobalt back box which is just the right sound with the combination and very well made, cheap as chips too.

I am really happy with the performance and multi mapping that the mod provides, it has sailed through it’s MoT’s, the most recent being just over a month ago despite the missing manifold CAT. Emissions are fine and no fault codes.

Good luck with whichever one you go for, each should produce approx an additional 23bhp and some extra torque, up to about 185bhp.

I just fitted the IL motorsport 4-1 and am getting the remap done after Christmas.Ā

Frankly I didn’t expect much difference until after the remap but it’s surprising how much livelier the engine feels already.

Looking at the above pics the BBR and IL appear identical.

Yes the mapping probably highlights the difference, as long as you get the tune done to be driveable rather than out and out power tuned. There are a few very minor differences between the two systems you mention, the collector and welding, but I agree flow wise they should be pretty much identical.

Hello alfordmazda

Do give Roddisons Motorsport Sheffield S9 1US 0114 244 5300 a call before you

progress with any purchase, ask for Paul he is probably one of the UK’sĀ most capable

persons with regard to improving performance on the MK3.

Cheers

I’ve just (2 days ago) done exactly this… new manifold, Pipercross filter & remap at BLINK MOTORSPORT in Winsford…
First of all the guys at Blink are spot on… Friendly, approachable and happy to chat all things MX5. On the day I was there, there were 3 other 5’s in, all track cars, having various mods, upgrades and service work, so they know these cars well…!
I chose Blink purely because they are closest to me, just a 25 min drive away. Also at £1000 +VAT I though the package price was fair.
So, onto the results…
The Dyno shows approx 25 extra BHP, which is very nice, but it’s not just about the numbers…
The ā€˜SPM’ (smiles-per-miles) have shot up…
It just seems very free spinning, and happy to let rip…
It’s still not a Porsche beater, but it’s very very close.
The extra 25 ponies are very welcome, but the seat-of-the-pants feel is worth every penny…

Indeed there are. The best performing manifolds have near equal length headers which is why some look like they’ve been badly put together while others are neater. Quite often the neater ones have unequal length headers however quite often the car wont allow more than neat and compact headers.

If you want the most out of one then look for manifolds/manufacturers that have equal length headers as that ensures the correct pulsing.

Good example below
