I have been doing some research in to my newly acquired mk1 Dakar edition. With this car I seem to have got the bug even more than my previous two MX-5’s. Anyway, to find out more about the car I wrote to the previous owners. a very nice gentlemen who was the second owner of my car sent me an email earlier, which prompted a very nice evening talking about the car.
The couple are thrilled that it has been looked after and is now owned by an enthusiast and are very much looking forward to seeing it in summer. They were very generous in giving me the following keep sakes from the Manx Millenium Experience back in 2000:
Large bonnet sticker and rally plate:
Brass badge:
Two unworn T shirts
It it sounded like it was an incredible event; with a chance to drive a closed section of the TT. I’m really pleased my car was there, I just wish I could’ve been!
About 8 weeks before, my MX5 was a bit charred following an exciting club meet
So a frantic hunt to find a replacement for the IOM event, which was already brought and paid for. I found SAZ9961 about 3 weeks before the event, but almost immediately had to leave it for 2 weeks while I went on a conference in LA. I spent money with Brainstorm and Racing Beat in time for the event…
There was an official VHS video of the event. I wonder if anyone has uploaded this someplace. The sticker was handed out to ACs and some others; mine went in the bin. We were kind of told we had to put this on our cars; I was kind of freaked, because I had no idea if the sticker would end up taking the paint off my new-to-me red car. I still have the numberplate and plaque/coaster someplace. There was also a flag, which is in my shed, and a hat.
I sold the red car in 2005, and I think it perished in 2012-2013
SAZ the previous owner of my car didn’t stick it to the car for the same reason; they did the Jurby track day too. Watching your YouTube vid, there’s a dark blue mk1 in the background, unlikely it’s my car. The VHS isn’t on YouTube yet unfortunately.
i wonder if there are any official club photos anywhere
The couple who gave me the bits are moving house next week so have everything packed up, but when they’re settled they’re going to look through their old photos and have some copies done. hopefully they might have some pics of the event.
the beauty of digital. Upload to photo bucket and they’re a doddle to share
Hi Guys- Is there anyone out there that could point me in the direction of the VHS video? My late father was at this event and loved his (Then) brand new Mk2 Icon. 21 years later and I (the Son!) have just bought the very car back off Ebay and am restoring. Any help very much appreciated, cheers Stuart
