Anyone had a generic map put on the ecu, if so were you happy,
my local garage now offers remapping and seem to think they could do a stage 2 map that would put it up to around 150 from 127, with a filter(already fitted) and a sport cat (not required but won’t be quite as much). They don’t run it on a dyno or analyser. I’m a little sceptical on the figures, given my experience with motorbikes, maybe 10 hp with full system and filter mapped on a dyno.
so just interested what experiences you may have had.

I’d imagine 10/15hp increase, 23hp seems very optimistic.
The reason is, the standard headers are tiny and very restrictive.
On a 2.0 you’ll need 4-1 headers to get 23hp with a remap, I would only but guess the 1.8 uses the same manifold.
Tell them you’ll pay them double what they’re asking if they’ll give you 50 bhp seeing as they don’t back a claim up with a dyno run……

And why would you want to overwrite Mazda map for the MX5 with a generic map?
Ask yourself how often you hit 2/3, let along full, throttle and whether you’d really mss as he use if that generic map…
It’s considerably more difficult to get increases in performance on a normally aspirated car. Particularly with only changing minor items. On a turbo it’s not so difficult. Beware a map that might ruin the smooth operation of the car. Also, personally I wouldn’t get a map without a dyno run which will prove improvements and the promise of a free return to standard if you’re not happy.

I agree with the folks that have replied. Seems an unrealistic gain based purely on a map. I’d think that would require at least a manifold swap. For reference, 2l ended at 189.9hp (annoying, but BBR did not do a “before” run) but assuming it’s roughly the same power gain (+25hp ish) that you are being quoted here.
I much prefer my 5 with more power and don’t regret having the work done at all. Nice gain in torque makes it easier to live with, and the additional power up top makes the car feel more than adequate and v fun when the conditions permit. But to gain noticeable power, you do need to spend ££££s.
I’d be very interested to hear what differentiates their “stage 1” from “stage 2” if no major hardware changes are required. Surley not just the filter change!?
To be honest wasn’t expecting gains of the magnitude suggested, but possibly improved running and torque, also not sure if Mazda limit the power output with standard mapping.
Would be interested to hear from anybody who has had this done, without any mods to see if any noticeable improvements or problems.
I think their stage 1 was air filter and stage 2 different cat (is that part of the manifold on these?).
He did suggest he would tweak the map for the standard headers.
Anyway runs quite nicely as it is so probably won’t bother to spend £250!
