Mark 3 MX5 (2013) NC Replacement steering pump query

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC Mk 3 (2013) Roadster 2l petrol -Aka Margot
  2. I’m based near: Plymouth and Exeter
  3. Hello, -I’m looking for technical help or recommendations about a replacement steering pump . My engine is a LF (MZR) 110kw- 147.5 hp. My local garage has quoted me £1200 to put a replacement ( Original Mazda) pump in. It seems a lot (£950 for the part) I don’t even know what the part number is to see what second hand, reconditioned or other supplied part may be suitable. Any help would be gratefull received.

Lots of used ones on ebay the right side of £50

Yep as above , boat loads on eBay

Thanks - I looked- but I’m not sure these would fit- sorry I’m a techncal numpty! Can you use any steering pump that says its Ok fo a Mk3 2l petrol? My garage made out my engine was rare and most wont be compatible.

The 2.0 engine in the MK3 has hardly changed from 2005 to 2014.

They made some internal changes in 2009 but the basic engine / car stayed the same.

They are having you on! Get a second opinion at least. Its not that hard to change and cheap to get a secondhand one as other have said.

Maybe someone local to you will offer to help you fit it. About an hour to 2 hours max.

Yeah literally any NC part will fit, they are 100% interchangable, and the actual fitting doesn’t take long- it’s a wee bit awkward but basically simple. You want a big syringe or similar and a bit of hose to suck some fluid out of the reservoir (there’s a pretty good chance it has really old fluid in, nobody ever changes their PAS fluid so it couldn’t hurt to do that at the same time)

Oh yeah don’t fill it with brake fluid, don’t arsk me how I knows, I just knows. Dang similiar shaped bottles.

(just in case it comes up, don’t ever run the pump without fluid- fill the reservoir before you start the engine after the swap, it relies on the PAS fluid to lubricate itself. Not real likely to be an issue but it occasionally catches people out)

Thank you so much for your response- your are right :upside_down_face:- I could even get a new Mazda one from Japan for a lot less!!! The part number I have found is NE5132650C. I can only find second hand ones ( there’s a dirth of new branded other options for some bizarre reason) but they are cheap, so I’ll go down that road. I could ask my husband to fit it - he normally works on old landrovers but this sounds pretty straightforward.

Thank you for the advice. The fluid has been and gone a few times ( A leaky seal by the pulley wheel) Its been topped up, then I think air gets in and burps it all over the engine. It’ll need a good clean once it’s mended .
