Mazda 6

Looks as if my main car will be written off after last weeks damage, looking at a 6 estate 14 reg.would it be a good buy and what about Mazda corrosion. Thanks

I doubt a 3 year old Mazda will have any corrosion…

A friend of mine had three over ten years, never had a problem with any of them

My main car is a 63 plate Mazda 6 Sport Estate. It’s a great car to drive and very reliable. No rust. Almost 45 mpg from the 2.2 175bhp diesel. Can highly recommend.

As above, 64 plate soul red 6 estate 2.2 diesel sportnav. Utterly faultless over 3 years and no hint of rust.

I concur with the sentiments above regarding the Mazda 6.

My wife has had two examples as her company cars in the past - an 05 plate, and an 08, both TS2 models, and they were superb.  Totally reliable and faultless for the three years she had each one.  Being both new at the time though, we had no experience with any rust, so we can’t help you there I’m afraid.  As they were both 2.0L petrol-engined examples, we got nowhere near the fuel consumption of the diesels already mentioned though - low thirties at best - but great cars nonetheless.

In fact, we such such good experiences with both our 6s, and this continued with our first MX-5 (another company car) in 2011, that when we joined the OC last year, we were totally amazed at the comments we read regarding the rust problems with 5s in particular, and it was inferred, with Mazdas in general.

Times move on though, and with my wife getting a VW Scirocco from her work in 2015, we decided to actually buy a replacement NC (our favourite version) last year, to use as a second-car, to continue the topless thing, and are now concerned about the potential rust issue with our (now) 9-year-old motor.  It’s still spotless at the moment, but we did intend this 5 as a ‘keeper’.

Of course we could trade it in for a later model in a year or two, to stave off the dreaded ‘tin worm’ - we’ll see.

My 2005 Mazda6 Sport started rusting at about 6 years, especially the notorious wheel arches.

Glad to hear the new ones are better.

The warranty on new Mazdas specifically excludes corrosion caused by salt - read the small print. The underseal is non-existent in large areas of the car underneath.  Our roads are salted.

So the first thing I treated my new Mazda3 to last year (63miles on the clock) was a full professional Dinitrol coating in all the relevant places.

It might well be the last car we buy before senility, dotage, decomposition and decay take us off the road, so it was worth investing in a bit of longevity.

I have a 2007 Mazda3, and to be honest I haven’t gone looking for any rust but there’s nothing apparent on the outside (I know, I know, that means nothing to what might be lurking behind the scenes), everything still feels solid. It’s just been for it’s MOT and passed without issue and the guys there haven’t mentioned anything in passing about rust.

I wouldn’t expect any obvious problems on a 3 year old car.

On a longer term basis, I wouldn’t view a Mazda 6 as a long term ownership,

unless my intention was to run it into the ground.

I generally buy £500, or £600 cars…, so to try to ensure I’m not buying

a pile of merde, I do a lot of checking around to see what are the weak points.

One of the places to do that is among the spares/repairs items on eBay.

Some time back, I did consider an older Mazda 6. On eBay, I found lots

of rusty Mazda 6’s which by their age, I reckoned shouldn’t be like that.

And among Mazda 6 diesels, lots of blown engines.

Sold our 56 plate Mazda 6 2.0 TS estate earlier this year at ten year old and 100k+ on the clock. 2.5 years of reliable motoring. Quite a lot of rust around rear drivers side arch and odd bits on the other side. Otherwise body work pretty solid. Very nice to drive and never let us down. Practical, comfortable and reliable.
