Mazda MX-5 NC Roadster - Temperamental roof

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC Roadster Coupe 1.8 SE
  2. I’m based near: Cardiff
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Hard top operation

My hard top works fine, and goes up and down as quickly and smoothly as it should.
However, when I start the car up properly for the first time, the roof does not open, and I get the bleeps.

However, if I only turn the key as far as the auxiliary position, without starting the engine, no problem at all - the roof works fine.

Also, once the car has warmed up, the roof operation is fine with the engine running.

I suspect this is something to do with electrical sensors. Is anyone else familiar with this issue?

Could you be starting the car with the roof unlatched?

I’m wondering if it’s due to battery voltage. Is the battery very old. Does the car get used regularly?

Are you asking if I unclipped the roof before starting the car?
I don’t think I do. I unclip the roof and press the button immediately afterwards, with the engine running.

I have only just bought the car. So no idea how old the battery is.
It has certainly had plenty of recent use. And the weather has been warm. The battery is not showing any other signs of failing.
Also, the roof either works perfectly well, or bleeps at me.
Would it be set up for an ‘all-or-nothing’ return?

Is the boot properly shut?

Really shut. With latch fully engaged, only then will this tell the lid controller it’s OK.

It can be closed but not properly 100% latched and going over a few bumps can complete the process - thus fooling the driver into thinking it’s an intermittent fault!

It fooled me the first few times… and others…

There are 5 hidden micro switches related to the roof operation, one of which is hidden up in the release mechanism above the rear view mirror. I have read that this one can go out of alignment. This will stop the roof working because the control module will think that the release mechanism is still latched closed even though you have released it.
This same switch is connected to the audio (hopefully you have the original player) and when you operate the release mechanism, if the audio is playing, it will cut out for a second whilst it alters the acoustics for roof down playing.
With the engine running switch on the audio before operating the release and listen for the audio to see if it goes quite for a second.

The other four switches are monitoring max travel, 2 on the main roof and 2 on the deck.

Another thing to check, when the roof fails to operate and you get the beeps, do both windows drop in readiness for the roof to move?

Thank you for that - I have just read elsewhere that the boot may be an issue.
So I guess I need to open and shut it when the roof is giving me a hard time,

Indeed the windows do drop in readiness.
Interesting about the clip reducing the stereo volume. Yes I do still have the original.
Will check that out shortly.

After going out to the car again, the roof did not open at first.
The stereo did NOT cut out when I unclipped the roof.
I opened and closed the boot.
Then the roof worked fine, but the stereo still didn’t cut out when I unclipped the roof.

You cannot get the roof to operate unless the boot is firmly closed. I found this out after having owned mine for a few days.
You may already know this above but I wonder if its something to do with the switch in the boot latch, as Richard mentions this. Worth a visit there to see if everything is secure and latched properly.
I had a Mk2 that had a dodgy catch, the boot lid rattled, a twiddle of the securing bolts sorted it.

As someone else said, Don’t discount low voltage caused by the engine not running. This should not happen unless
a, the battery is weak or possibly
b, you have a higher than normal resistance in the wiring and connectors which can be down to previous water ingress at the fuse box. aka, scuttle grommets

Is this function not for BOSE audio only?

It now seems likely, was lead to believe otherwise.
