Mazda’s Innovative High-Compression Straight-Six - in an MX-5 ever?

The following story popped up on my Google News Feed

Many years ago, I owned a Mazda Xedos 6 with its lovely smooth 2L V6 engine - I used to wonder about that being stuck in an MX-5 - so reading the above story made start wondering along those lines again.

I am not that technical - and dont really understand about engine sizes and placement etc - but just out of curiosity - would the new straight six fit inside an MX-5? or how’s about Mazda sticking it in the future NE model - whenever that will come out?

An affordable, straight six, open top, rear drive sportscar would be fabulous.

BMW Z4 in 2.5ltr or above are straight 6

Well done Mazda for daring to be different. I’d love to be a fly on the wall in some of the design meetings ! Assuming I could speak Japanese for course :wink:
