Mc_Bonio's British Racing Green MK1

I dribble most of the day Robin … from a variety of orifices Wink

That is the perfect ride height! Lovely looking car you have there. Do you have the Eibach springs on standard shockers? If so whats the ride like? You’ve sold me the springs  It will probably be next month when I can buy them. Hopefully it’ll sort out my slightly lopsided ride height too…

Also, have you ever had any bother from the police with the front plate? Wouldn’t mind adding a sticker plate to mine.

16 years :open_mouth: hopefully mine is still alive in 16 years.

I’m liking the chrome rims and tan roof  and the camo bonnet haha

No issues regarding plate in past 6 years with Police or MOT testers - Car has V Max Progressive Height adjustable coilovers fitted - ride is excellent .

I’m tempted to order a sticker plate. I just need to decide what to do with the number plate holes in the front bumper…

I’ve been having a think and maybe coilovers are the way to go, rather than springs. It’ll be another month or 2 before I can afford some but it’s on my list of things to do.

Slight update: bought and fitted a mohair soft top off a MK2.5 today  will upload some pics soon. Didn’t take much longer than an hour to fit, and it passed the rain (hose pipe) test!

Looks a lovely car

Thanks!

Just posting some pics of my new soft top. Can’t fault it so far, plus we’ve had some decent weather recently so I’ve had the roof down whenever possible.

Did an oil + filter change last week, fitted some new headlight bulbs and yesterday fitted some nice JBL door speakers. Totally forgot to take any pics but hey it wasn’t that interesting.

Here’s some shitty rain pics!

I managed to get a pic of the rust on the passenger side sill. The pic shows the rear part, just infront of the rear wheel. How bad is this?

One of the very common areas for rust and unfortunately the story might get worse once it’s fully cut back and full extent exposed .  Luckily there are some very good restorers out there who have a lot of experience with these repairs.

Seen a lot worse than that getting fixed.

Don’t despair.

Wanna see mine?

As ab incentive, you could ask BoxerDog if he will show you his…erm… “bottom”.

It’s lovely.

Never need to be asked more than once to flash my bottom …Wink

Very nice!

Looking forward to seeing the restored beastie when finished ??

It’ll never match your BD, but it will be solid, reliable, and useable.

New brakes, suspension, braces, bags of rot proofing and a load of basic fabrication.

Thankfully, the tub in general is very saveable which as you know is vital.

that looks pretty scary to me. I checked online and the car has never failed for rust, but that looks like its not new…

Get a specialist to sort as boxerdog mentioned.

I used fat fender in Croston, Lancashire to sort my S-ltd and he did a great job. not as bad underneath as yours, but still needed an extensive refurbishment. If has gone at rear sill it will probably be bad at front if you take wings off.

I wouldn’t use the jack there. The outer panel (“the sill”) looks to have a thick layer of filler on top. I’m afraid the repairs will likely be quite significant. With that much of a hole, probably the inner sill is fairly compromised.

That is very clean bulldog!

Well I’m not sure whether to be scared or not. Some people saying it’s bad, some saying not so bad. I suppose it’s hard to tell from a pic, and before the outer sill has been removed.

I knew about the hole(s) before I bought it, and I’m willing to spend some money on making it solid again. Plus I know a few people who can weld.

As long as I can get it through this next MOT in July I’ll be happy!

Bad, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder Mc-Bonio, plus the much sucking of teeth by “welders” as opposed to professional coachwork restorers…and then dial in the thickness or otherwise of owner’s wallets! There is no right or wrong answer to restoring old cars. How about 12k for a Heritage pattern MGB body shell?

Your car is perfectly restorable…with  suitable amount of wonga  in excess (if done professionally) than it cost you.

There’s the rub as always.

It’s worse than I thought, but far better than mine.

This was mine yesterday at the start of it’s chassis rebuild and very complex rot eradication.

I knew it was going to be much as found rot wise, however I was not quite prepared for the list of chassis issues.

My car has various plus points going for it giving the work I’ve put into it over 15 years…a new engine being just one “item”.

It needs a full coil-over build, new discs, calipers, tan hood, extensive re-metalling, alloys, tyres, door cards, the automatic sump was found to be porous, the 6 bolt chassis braces are rotten as is the front anti roll bar and the drop-links look iffy.

As of yesterday everything is bought and awaiting delivery. I went for the Koni SRT kit. Goodluck ot me then…we will see how they do.

Why? My life-style choice to spend 3k plus on what I have rather than that on a borderline “someone else’s”

I’d need to fork out 6k or 7k plus for recent import…of which genuine top-scoring cars are becoming thinner on the ground and now we see pretty second division stuff with iffy history being hawked.

And so…have some!

The windscreen, transmission, front & back bumper are original though!

I’d start a restoration thread but to be honest, the interest in Mk1’s has plummeted as the years roll by except for a few dedicated pop-up “fans”…the same people who will pay arguably over the realistic odds for the “right stuff”.

They are out there…they walk amongst us…like the guy who paid 46k for a low miles mint & boxed Capri Brooklands last year!

Hi,

Well Scottishfiver - I’m sure that in another owners hands, they would have looked at all that rust and scrapped the car. Well done for saving another Mk1.

Mr Bonio, It looks like your BRG is a Monza special edition, of which only 800 were made. It still has the original alloy wheels and the Monza decal on the bonnet.     However it is missing the decals on the rear quarter panels - possibly due body work being done in that area in the past. It is still a great looking car, and you certainly know how to polish it.

I am in the process of bringing my BRG back to road worthy condition. When I bought it it had been off the road for 5 years.

Nigel

I would disagree

We have lost too many build threads, particularly ones done properly!

get the camera out…

[quote=boxerdog1]

Apologies to OP for the slight thread hijack ! But what is your opinion of the V-Maxx coilovers ? Have they been fitted to your car for a while ?

Ok Boss!

May come in handy for Mc_Bonio in particular.
