Meet Mindy, Daves MK1 NA MX5

Hi Russ,

I can’t remeber off the top of my head but will have a look in the garage today. I should still have the link to where I bought it too. Only thing about the dye…don’t get it on your hands/clothes/anything you don’t want dyed! It takes ages to get off! lol

I’ll post up what it is later this evening mate.

Thanks Rhino! Yeah, you’re move sounds tohave been the correct thing to do aswell. Sounds bliss where you live now. We’re so looking forward to having a very similar place to live/lifestyle, really can’t wait to get moved! We’ll also be that bit closer to England (ok, not that much closer but every little helps! ) so we can start attending some meets and shows! Hopefully finally get to meet some of you guys and see your stunning MX5’s.

Dave

Hi Russ,

Checked today and it’s a complete kit from “FurnitureClinic.co.uk”. I bought it via Amazon, cost £26.90 including vat and delivery. What to look for is: Furniture Clinic complete leather repair kit - 12 colour options.

Hope this helps

Dave

Thanks Dave!

Russ

No problem mate. I’d highly recommend it, our seats looks look superb now, very satisfied.

Just had Mindy out for her first proper drive since end of October last year. Was freezing cold, but sun was shining, roads were dry(ish) so we went for a run down to our new house to get an idea where we’re gonna build the garage, sunhouse etc. And yes, roof down! Did lunch again in the wee village cafe, then went for a wander round the village. Folk are so friendly and it’s just relaxed and quiet.

We drove back over the moors road that goes from Stow to Lauder then up the A68 to home. Thought I’d stop to get some quick photos of Mindy! Where we stopped is literally 2 mins drive from the cottage (less than half a mile) so this is what we have on our door step roads wise!

And good to see the MX5 love is still there on the open road…got a wave from a mk3 then shared a lights flash with a mk2 that had the hard top fitted (wonder if either are on here?) Awesome wee run and think Mindy likes her new drive way/village

Not done a lot to Mindy lately, what with DD getting her suspension doe and winter wheels sorted. Decided that seeing as I’m stuck in the house cos of this bloody covid-19, though I might as well do some 'internet shopping! Soooooo, bought a wee part for the interior that I wanted to finish off the center console chrome.

IL motorsport chrome hazard light/headlight pop up switch surround.

Have to say, for a part from such a reputable company the fit was absolutely piss poor! There is s curvature to the switch panel that this piece simply did not have. No way the sticky pad that’s on it would even try to hold the part in place, so I had to glue it and press really hard for ages to get the part to stay put! Got there in the end though and pleased how it now looks

Change of mind! Sitting looking at mk1 mx5s on the internet, and looking at what I could do next with Mindy during lock down. Seeing pics of the centre console without the wood and just the chrome vent surrounds got me thinking…I didn’t like that fake wood kit I fitted any more! Said to Gayle who thankfully admitted she didn’t like it from the start and thought it looked tacky! Must admit, been thinking the same! So went out today and all the wood trim kit is off. Cleaned up the dash and think with just the chrome vent rings (and wee bit round the hazard switch) the dash looks a lot nicer. What you think?

Wee cheeky shot, looking all inviting in the sun! Decided that as I had to drive to work today to pick up another monitor to use on laptop at home, it would be rude not to take Mindy for a blast!

What difference getting out for a wee drive (first proper drive for over a month) makes you feel so much better!

Oh, and also fot a Jazz Performance stainless steel cup holde coming for Mindy that replaces the useless ashtray in the centre console. Should look good methinks!

Got the Jass Performance S/S cup holder fitted, and also bought the Jass Performance gear surround. Love the fit of these, really great products from Jass. Got them all from Andrew at Autolink, quick delivery and superb service as always. Also got the new rubber gaiter/bush replacement kit coming for the top of the gearbox where the gear stick bolts on. Loving the look she now has!

So, we decided to go for our weekly shop today and thought as the sun was out, and we both needed cheering up after losing my mum Saturday and still being in this lock down, we’d take Mindy. Not broke any rules, got our shopping and made us both feel a lot better (plus we got fresh air and vitamin D aplenty!). Proof that a weekly shop (including 4 bottles of wine!) does indeed fit in the boot of an MX5!

Oh, and also got a wave from another MG, this time an old MG Midget. Was a wave from an MGBGT last time out! lol Seems our wee Mk1’s are deffo being recognised by the owners of older classic cars as proper classics now, which is nice.

Went for shopping again, taking the scenic route and the perfect car for this glorious weather. Peaked 33 degrees here today, unusual for Scotland and at this time of year. Was so nice getting the sun and fresh air while driving

got to say this thread is the first one i have read and it has drawn me right in to the forum even had to make a user name to write this message :grinning: this makes me want to drive my own mk1 very badly but unfortunately it needs extensive mechanical fixes. thanks to your thread you have motivated me to carry on with my restoration.

Thank you for your kind words Nick, much appreciated. And glad Mindy is giving you inspiration for your own mx5. These wee cars are so addictive and full of personality and character, they just make you smile every time you see them. I’ve only just started with Mindy in terms of restoration etc, there are a lot of members cars here that have had far more love and attention that will blow your mind! They certainly gave me a lot of ideas and inspiration for Mindy. Plus the members are great for any advice you need. Looking forward to seeing your progress with yours mate!

So, much has been happening! Coming to terms with losing mum, still got a lot of legal stuff to do and help my sister with sorting her estate. Not easy with half the family not on speaking terms and no idea where they live now. :(

Now for some better news…we have finally moved to our new (old) house in the scottish borders…and loving it! So quiet, peaceful and chilled out down here it really is amazing. House needs a shed load of work done ( got sparky rewiring whole house next weekend) then new windows to get ordered and fitted after that along with decorating. It’s slowly coming together though, Gayle and me have been so busy since we got here getting the garden sorted, doing stuff to the inside (ive been fitting stuff, putting up shelfs, swapping out some of the light fittings and switches etc. Not got the planning in for the new double garage yet, but if we run out of time we’ve hatched a plan to get the single garage we have here emptied enough to get Mindy in there for the winter (she’s currently slumming it in the leaky car port joined onto the garage at the moment!). Had family down this weekend (all outside and following the rules) and they have fallen in love with our new house, saying they cant believe how big it is and the amount of land it has. They all love the village too, which is one of the prettiest in the borders. have to say, thought I would struggle leaving our old town (even with all the agro we had there recently) as I’d been in that house for 27 yrs. I have to admit, I don’t miss it a bit! people and neighbours here are totally amazing, and so helpful too. We seem to have fitted right in no probs!

So, thought we’d take Mindy for a wee adventure on some undiscovered (by us!) roads around the village and surrounding countryside.Be rude not to post a few photos! Mindy is a bit dirty as not had a wash since we left our old town…only just got the outside tap fitted a few days ago so now we’re good to go.

This is the back road into our village (basically 2 min drive from our house), can just see the village in the distance

And wee Mindy!

Loving her new life in the Scottish Borders. We wanted to see where the road went, so drove for around 7 miles and the hills/scenery is breath taking. Eventually the road brings you onto the back road into Galashiels at Tweedbank side. Can’t believe we have this as our back garden/playground!

Sooo, not done much to Mindy at all during all this COVID stuff. Have had her out a fair bit for a run, but not done anything to her. So, decided that as much as I love the look of the wooden steering wheel I bought for her I had gone off the look now and am going for a more subtle look with the interior. So bye bye wood/chrome wheel, and back with her oem Nardi black leather wheel. Just think seeing as I took all the fake wood off the centre console to make it back to black, the wood one the wheel looked out of place. And although with it being smaller it gave me more leg room, it obscured most of the instrument dials which really annoyed me. Add to that the fact that when the sun was behind us, at some angles/height of the sun it would reflect off the chrome spokes and blind me when driving! Any hoo, back to black as Amy Whinehoose used to sing…interior is now black and red with chrome/stainless details. Much simpler and better looking I think

And although Mindy is normally parked in the car port next to garage, and Gayle Juke (aka “Effie” as she looks like a wee elephant lol) is where Mindy is in this next photo, thought it would be nice to get a wee photo of Mindy and DD together. This is the view into back garden from our bedroom window! (Which now looks even more different as we’ve had a fence built all the way along the driveway separating the drive from the garden!

Also looks very different at the moment…we have over a foot of snow here! Mindy hiding under the snow with her coat on! lol

I did like the look of the wooden steering wheel when you fitted it. However if it blocked a clear view of the dash then that would bug me too. The Nadia leather steering wheel equally looks good too.:+1:

Thanks Andrew, yes, it is a lovely looking wheel, and nice to use too. Also gives a lot more room between bottom of wheel and your legs, but unfortunately the top half of the speedo and the indicator lights etc are obscured. Can see them if you kinds bring your head down a bit, but not ideal so had to go.

I’ve just spent an hour reading this whole thread, wow what an epic journey you’ve been on with this little beauty, and how fantastic that you’ve shared the journey with us in such a detailed way👍
I’m going to be popping back regularly to keep updated, however you must have one of the best up-together examples out there… is there anything left to do? Let’s hope we can all look forward to a summer without covid.
Keep up the good work mate:clap::beers:
P. S. Sad to read about your mum, been there, your partner sounds like a top lass and has no doubt been a rock.

Tend to agree, the black looks much better. Rule of thumb…listen to the wife, they’re right most of the time. :+1:

Thanks mate. Really appreciate that, as a lot of folk have said in the past I waffle too much lol :grinning: My wife is a fellow petrol head, and has been my rock throughout everything. She’s just as keen to work on Mindy as I am and we work well as a wee team so I’m a really lucky guy!
Mindy is far from finished, infact we’re only really at the beginning. She looks much better in the photos than she actually is. The rear sills on both sides really need doing. They have been done in the past, but a really bad job. Although solid, whoever did it just welded over the top of the old sills, so know I’m probably facing a can of worms when we get them done!! I’m also going to be sanding her right back and giving her a full respray myself as it’s one of my favourite parts of restoring cars. trouble is I’m not as fit/young as I used to be so getting down and under the car is a major task lol. I’m looking at buying one of those electric car ramps (or it might be hydrolic) to make life easier. Glad Mindy has a wee following though, really makes it worth it when you hear other members/owners are enjoying the read and getting something out of it. :sunglasses:
