You’ve actually made me question my wheel choice. Was gonna go black, but bottled it and went for silver. My car is aluminium.
I’m actually not much of a black wheel fan, but these fitted every other parameter and they were in stock! And they do work with the colour.
I’d have gone anthracite if I’d have had full choice.
I’m running Tein Flex z’s on my Abarth 124 Spider which is essentially a Japanese MX5 with some Italian soul.
The coils are great for fast road biased cars and cost about £500 less then the MeisterR CRD’s. Can’t comment on track use as I haven’t tried them on track. Ride height is 320mm all round and damping is set to 10clicks from Hard on the front and 12 clicks from Hard on the rear as recommended by Tein. The preload is factory set so I just checked it and left as was. The ride is very compliant and comfortable. No banging or scrapping on speed bumps etc. I also like the idea of attaching some motors to the shock damping adjuster for that geeky, techy feel.
You will find most people are running Meisters because everyone else is. I couldn’t justify the extra money when I purchased and I am very pleased with them. Much better than the Eibach Pro-line springs and stock Bielsteins I had on before.
I had edfc on my nissan and it was awesome. Such a great feeling to drive along and firm up the entire suspension at the push of a button, even if it is an expensive gimmick it’s one I’d have again.
Forgot to update this, thanks to all for all the info.
I went for the teins and am so far very happy, build quality is just as good as I remember them and we’re a doddle to fit. Will be lowering them a little more than initially and finding the best balance with the damping.
Also went for 215/45/17 Goodyear eagle f1 asymmetric6 on 8x17 wheels as I got a good price on the tyres.
Thanks again
Which Teins did you go for?
Flex z. I spoke with tein directly and they informed me they are the direct equivalent of the old control master type flex I had on my nissan which I loved. These are the complete assembled jobs with topmounts already fitted, only difference being because they are static on the nc so just have rubber topmounts not pillowball bearings.
As I thought they are, thanks👍
They look very affordable probably £300 ish less than MeisterR equivalent. Driftworks?
I’ve been thinking for a while about changing mine, still unsure TBH what to do. It has very good condition Sportives on now.
Once the weather is better I’ll have a good run out and let you know what they’re like. The car hasn’t been driven much since I fitted them and I’m wrapping up some other jobs.
And they came in at 723 delivered. I got offered some almost new meister for similar money but I’m hopeful these will be nicer to live with.
Very interested to hear your thoughts on the setup when you have had some time in the seat.
I also run Flex Zs and would also recommend them. I got mine from Bofi for a similar price to Dean.
Mine have been fitted since March and around 2000 miles of mixed driving done. Couldn’t be happier. Compliant but with good body control = exactly what I was after
What were you running before ?
Standard SE spec suspension.
Nothing wrong with it per se, just wanted to reduce the arch gap and after 85k miles I knew there would be improvements to be made
Would you class the Tein setup as firmer than the SE suspension ?
I currently have the factory Bilsteins on my mk3 sport.
My mate has an SE with eibach -35mm springs.
The concensus is they’re a more road focused Coilover with occasional track, whereas the other monotube high pressure setups are less forgiving and ideal for track but tolerable for road. Tein said to me that they deliberately kept with a twin tube design as its more compliant and allows more shock travel, but could also sell me mono coilovers for more money. Fair enough. I was also in talks with racing beat about them and he was very helpful, was about to buy some from them but lost contact with the guy.
Depends how you set it up. It can be, if you want it to
At midway on dampening/rebound adjustment I’d say it was comparable, but with better compliance, turn in and far less roll.
Some of the benefits will also be from the suspension geo setup as well of course.
Yes and also from previous experience I can’t emphasise enough, people need to work out what they want the hub centre to fender distance to be and relax all the fixed rubber suspension bushings. Jack up the bottom arm until that height can be measured and then lock in the bushings all round. This way everything is neutral at ride height.
So many people put coilovers on and complain about the ride because all the bushings are pre-loaded and twisted where they’re still set to stock height but riding 2 inches lower etc.
Just to update, I took it for a reasonably lengthy drive earlier with the tein flex coilovers on, new wheels and tyres and I’ll be perfectly happy with these I think. All noticeable wallowing and roll is gone, ride is firm and compliant on mid setting and just as comfortable as was stock (215/45 tyres probably help too).
Thanks for your input people, much appreciated .
