If the memory stick is formatted with the FAT32 standard then the usual limit is 32GB, which is what I am using. I tried a 64GB stick but that was in ExFAT and not recognised. So we have two 32GB FAT32 sticks (neither full yet), one classical, one pop.
I use these USB3 sticks because they are so fast to copy to or read and yet still work on USB2 (as in the car), but beware of the fluctuating prices, currently £26 while I paid a bit less than half of that in September.
Also, the (now defunct) dealer told me that a USB hard drive should work if it uses less than 1Amp of current, and again it would need to be FAT32. But this is only hearsay, and I’ve not tried it because all my portable USB hard drives are ITB and NTFS.
Has anyone else tried a bigger hard drive instead of a 32GB memory stick?
Hi Mike here, have been using a 16Gb memory stick, works fine. I think the size limit is the sticks must be FAT 32 formatted, which means 32 Gb should be the top size limit.
I have used a 64GB USB stick in my ND which works, however the number of tracks you can store on it makes the system extremely slow to start up and use (it seems to scan all of them when it turns on). Coupled with the inability to play things in the correct order, I have given up and use my phone over Bluetooth instead.
Thanks all. My current 4GB was a small TDK stick that folded parallel to the trim after inserting into the USB socket and so did not stick out. Unfortunately this TDK memory stick is no longer available. Will most likely go for the tiny inexpensive sandisk 16GB or 32GB memory stick so it too will be virtually unobtrusive.
If the drive has to be formatted in FAT32 then there is a utility available free that will format drives over 32GB in FAT32 format. If it works and you like it you can send the developer a donation. Check it here -
Ended up going for the same samsung usb memory stick as “harco” but just 32GB of memory. Installs music quickly is unobtrusive and works in the car.
Am using it in the upper USB car socket for complete Albums, and have kept the old 4GB USB memory stick in the lower USB socket for single songs that I buy from i-tunes.
I see that the upper USB 1 is described as “Transdrive FIT” and the lower USB 2 as " Transit Drive". Don’t know why this is but both USB memory sticks play in either USB socket. Will have to look up the manual some time to try and find out why different descriptions
