when i took out the engine there was a metal gasket between the engine and the bell housing is this needed or can i leave it off
I’d leave it on, why do you want to leave it off?

i just dont know what it is there for, i have seem other engines and gearbox with nothing on
Yes, I too am unsure of its exact purpose but it must be there for a reason and I can’t think of a reason to leave it off. I think it at least fills gaps between the bell housing and the engine block but whether it does more than that who knows.
In certain places it will block water ,road chippings etc from entering bell hsg .
