Metallic sound, one single, loud knock when turning right at low speed.

Hi.

The thing is when I park and turn right I can hear one, quite loud metallic knock.

Especially when the left front wheel is higher, like on the low curb, and it drives down from it. Then there is that sound.

I was told in a garage it would be antiroll bar links. Replaced them and still the same.

It occurs when there is a tension on suspension when turning in lower speed. When driving and cornering in normal or fast speed it is completely fine.

Is it possible that antiroll bar bushes are faulty and cause that sound ? But it is metallic sound… So I am confused …

Maybe this the top mount of a shocker ?

Broken spring?

Hi Luke , I would recommend you jack the front up take the front wheels off and have a good look around all your steering and suspension, check for a broken spring, track rod end anti roll bar etc for any play see if anything shows up . If you state which mk you have then it would help others who may have had same problem give you a solution/answer .

Right. I have Mk3 2007, 1.8i option pack. So base model with same extra features.

I’ve checked all the suspension also the steering. Seems to be OK. It was confirmed by mechanic in a garage. But obviously not everything is fine as I see.

I didn’t think about the spring. But now when I am thinking about that noise it is exactly “springing noise”.

Is there any chance to see the crack on the spring to be sure ? Or rather mission impossible to see that failure ?

TBH I am not clued up on the mk3 but if you can support the car on axle stands somewhere on the chassis so the suspension is not under any load you may be able to check if there’s any movement or play in the spring or where its broken, use a torch to examine spring you should be able to see if its cracked somewhere. Like I said i’m not familiar with the mk3 so hopefully someone who is will help you better than I can. One other option you could try is u-tube type in how to check for a broken spring and see what results come up Ok

Well, I think, I’ve checked everything and it is seems to be a top mount of the shocker. Anyway this is not intrusive and not happens too often so I think nothing will break until I buy new coilovers, which will be next year. Then I will replace everything there, from A to Z.

I have noticed another thing by the way. There is a loose which I can feel on the front right wheel.

But only when I’m moving it forward - backward. Short movements.

No loose when shaking a wheel with hand on 9 and 3 hour, and no loose when hands on 12 and 6.

Any ideas ?

Steering track rod end?

Glad you have found the main problem, as re 2nd issue is it a slight knock/tap type noise ? If it is it’ll be loose brake pads in the carrier, there will be a thread about this somewhere in the brake section ( In the brake section their’s a search section at the bottom left, type in "loose pads " and you will see posts about this problem )

Well it is hard to say. There is no sound. I just feel that tap on my hand. I’ve checked track rods and don’t feell anything there.

Tomorrow I will check that brake pads for sure. Thanks for your suggestion.
