Miata (MK1) 1991 Japanese Import - Emissions Test

I am trying to get my MX5 back on the road but run into a difficulty with passing the emissions tests (J reg 1991). Previously this has not been an issue however the car has barely been run in over 2 years - which might not help matters.

A local ( and usual) garage in Stirling advised that the car had failed so collected it but only when home observed that the test carried out related to a car with catalyst and closed loop control. Now in previous years (at the same garage) the car was subject to a Non-Cat test so can anyone knowledgeable in the rules etc advise if anything has changed recently ? It has brake efficiency issues that will require to be addressed however on the above, I seek some clarity or a more specialised place that has some interest in helping me keeping it running …

It’s NOT a Miata, nor is it an Mx5.
It’s a Eunos Roadster if it is as you say a " Japanese Import".
That…may well be where your problems started if you name it 2 things it is not as you have here.
Very possible the garage got confused as well as you and tested it as you described…which was wrong.
Call them and talk about it. Was the guy who failed it the usual guy? Or a mechanically ignorant newbie who is not aware what JDM means in MOT terms?
Best of respect to you but you need be consistent in calling it what it is when people are working on it.

It should be tested as “an unlisted import” not an MX-5. It is a Eunos Roadster NOT an MX-5

Quite.

Should be tested non-cat our Exocet which is based on a 90 Eunos Roadster just passed with no issue on a non-cat test. There should be a note on your V5 which you can show to the tester ours is in the Special notes section on the front page and says:

EMMISION LIMIT - %CO 3.5, HC 0.12. The tester should know this.

Our note was added as part of the IVA if you don’t have one not sure if you need to apply for one but I think it’s just the manufacturing date that is they key.

Thanks all - I have called the Garage (D&G) and once the appropriate person comes into work they say they will call me… I have also printed out 19th Edition of the MOT Test Spec which clearly states the three tests (pre 1975, post 1975 to 1992 etc).

Don’t think garages like being told but its a conversation to be had as they say…

Will it be a free retest? Feels like it should be. They will probably want to see the V5 to confirm so make sure you have that handy.

Agreed.
And to be frank, on my 2nd thoughts, should pay the OP’s fuel as well as a good will token .

Munro Road in the Springkerse Ind Est perchance?
They have a pretty good rep tbh…bit surprised by it all.
Anyway…mistakes happen.

Yes, Munro Road, found the garage good so why I go there. New test set so possibly down to familiarisation (or forced default) and although garage didn’t call back on contacing again they will retest on basis of 3.50 / 1200 CO /HC figures and we take it from there. Brakes need attended but always do and something they usually do at this time. As you say, mistakes happen, and things get resolved amicably … hopefully.

Thanks folks
