I assumed that the foam was there to muffle the sound of the injectors so when mine was chewed, I replaced it with some offcuts of sound deadening material with aluminium on one side. So far the heat of the engine has not affected it.
Had the same problem in my garage. A combination of traps with peanut butter & a small dish again with peanut butter mixed in with poison did the trick.
Since you say the car is outside remember you could be risking poisoning other animals including peoples’ marauding pets which wouldn’t go down so well.
As an alternative to poisons mice dislike some strong odours, the best of these would be plain white vinegar as it’s not so big a risk to other animals as most of them can’t stand the smell either and wouldn’t go near it.
A bowl under the engine bay (in fact if you can find a place to put another bowl in the engine bay that would work well too) should help deter them.
I will say that the two negatives to this are that 1) I’ve read that if they do have a nest actually in the vehicle then they’ll ignore the vinegar to protect their offspring, and 2) the whole place can smell of vinegar. That said it does appaear to work from my own experiences.
On the plus side at least it does look like they were maybe just taking the foam away for nesting material to another location and not deciding to use the interior of your car for a nest.
I guess it’s the curse of owning such a tasty car as an MX-5
I put a large saucer out for the bird seed everyday, just love all the birds in the garden. Yesterday though we had a mouse feeding on the nuts in the tray. I think it lives under or inside next doors shed, he’s always got bait down, had rats at one stage last year. At least my garage is mouse free for now.
