Mileage Correction

Hi all,

I’ve recently converted my dash clocks from the MK1 ones to the Mk2 ones, but am having trouble resetting the milage to read corractly for the car.

Does any one know how this can be done, or know anyone in the Swindon area that can offer this service?

(Please PM me if you don’t want to post a how to here)

Any help would be much appreciated.

Is this an easy conversion? Does it just plug straight into the Mk1 wiring loom?

I thought that the Mk2 instrument cluster was controlled by a on-board computer, with the speedometer and (digital) odometer driven by an electronic pulse from the gearbox rather than via a drive cable?

It’s not the easiest of jobs, but it can be done.

I’ve built a westfield with all Mk1 MX5 donor parts, although there’s not enough room for the mechanical speedo cable in the tunnel. #9cable snapped after 50 miles!)

to do the swap, you need to use the electronic speed sender unit. This fits into the same hole in the gear box as the mechanical one - Simples. (just run some wires from the sender up to the dash.

The tricky bit is the wiring behind the dash. the Mk1’s use 2 connectors, and the MK2 uses 3, and very few of the wires are in the same places. A little guess work and a few downloaded wiring diagrams sorted this out. (you need to get the connecters for the mk2 cluster separately from scrappy or dealer).

I also swapped the ‘proper’ oil pressure gauge from the mk1’s into the mk2 cluster (none of the terminals on the back of the cluster match up for this, and in hind sight i wouldn’t do this again). Instead you’d need the sender unit that plugs into the engine for the oil pressure ‘switch’

Appart from that, the cluster seems to fit into the same hole.

The ‘onboard computer’ bit is part of the cluster.
