Mk 1 1.6 Replacement Engine

  1. My model of MX-5 is: Mk 1 1.6
  2. I’m based near: Liverpool
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: _Purchasing and having fitted a reconditioned engine.

The cylinder head has a hairline fracture, and I want to keep the car on the road as I have owned it for 20 years and it’s in VGC so worth investing in a new engine. All help, suggestions, recommendations are appreciated. Thanks Paul

Why not get a new head for it, rather than replace with another engine of the same age.

A proper reconditioned engine is going to be £1200+, plus the fitting. There are a few scammers out there advertising “reconditioned engines” which are nothing of the sort. Google “Heathrow Engines” for example.

For instance, it might be possible for a specialist to repair your original cylinder head.

Some companies maybe worth speaking to, to understand the options:

Your local garage might know of local engineering firms who might be able to do something.

Find a used cylinder head and get it refurbished:

Hey thanks for the reply saz… it was my local garage that advised me to go for a recon engine rather than a replacement head. I guess I should try to speak with an expert about this. I don’t suppose you (or any other member) know of any MX-5 specialists in the Merseyside area ?
