I’m trying to remove the head from a spare engine but the bolts holding it to the block have a multi faceted star shape to them, consequently nothing in my collection of sockets will fit properly to undo them. Does anyone have any pointers on what I should use ?

Yes, that is a rare type of fixing.

I think what you are going to require is called a spline socket.

A 12 sided 14mm socket should fit them.

As above 12 sided 14 mm socket.I just had head off .skimmed etc, and refitted yesterday so will do for sure

Think its 12 sided 12MM socket, not 14!!
