Mk.1 Dash warning lights not illuminating

Hi guys,

I’m fairly new to owning and MX5 and was able to fix most of the little niggles after the first 2 weeks but one thing that I cannot seem to sort out is the dash warning lights. They do not light up when turning the key eg. handbrake, oil pressure (I’m assuming) or even light up in the evening or any other time the ones I’m talking about are the four warning lights that require four small light bulbs. All the other lights seem to work, as in light pop up, indicators and high beam.

I’ve replaced all the small bulbs, tried to wiggle the connections, checked fuses under the bonnet and had a quick look at the ones in the driver footwell. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Jason

Are the bulbs in the seat correct? is there any damage to the board on the back of the cluster?,is everything else working ok?

Hi Jason,

Welcome to the Forum. As Geoff Walton always comments, “ its advisable to add details about you car and your location to your Profile as it does help others to provide advise”.

These four warning lights do different things depending upon your type of Mk1.

The UK MX5 has top left – Battery warning light; top right Handbrake & Brake fluid warning light; lower left Rear Fog light (Only works when headlights are on); and lower right, Hazard warning light (Press the Hazard switch and this light and both indicators flash). None of these four light up when the side lights are on. For your information there is no oil pressure warning light. Search the forum for threads about this. When you turn on the ignition the following two lights should work – st1:placeBattery: Handbrake.

The Japanese Eunos Roadster has the following warning lights - top left – Battery warning light; top right Handbrake & Brake fluid warning light; lower left - ? (I can’t get this one to light up to read the symbol) ; Lower right – Seat Belt warning light and buzzer. (This is sometimes disabled by owners as they don’t like the buzzer. Mine was disconnected at the lower end of the seat belt stalk.)

When you turn on the ignition the following three lights should work – st1:placeBattery: Handbrake & Seatbelt.

I hope this helps.

In checking this out, I’ve just found out that the Battery warning light does not work on my wife’s Roadster………………

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies thus far. As looking at the rear of the cluster goes there seems to be a little corrosion on some terminals, but nothing that seems crazy bad. I’ll take a pic tonight if possible.

As for my Mazda it is a 1992 1.6 Eunos Roadster. I have none of the lights you’ve stated Nigel Sad let alone the seatbelt buzzer. The connections at the bottom of the seatbelt stalk seem to be connected.

Any more ideas?
