Mk 2.5 Key Cut

When I got my car, it came only with one key.  No fob or else.

At first I didnt know if I had an alarm, but it does indeed have one. Sticker on window.

Now I want to get another key cut, but was looking at:

http://www.mazda-mx5-shop.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=25&products_id=40

My key does look indeed like the far left, first.

so does that mean I cant get a key cut at a lower cost? I just want to keep a spare key for emergencies?

Many Thanks

Try Timpsons. Got a spare key cut for our mk2 with the transponder built in for £40, if it doesn’t work you can take it back for a refundThumbs up

Surely a Timpsons key will still need programming? So you’d need to factor that in. My 2003 1.6 was also acquired with only one key (plus a remote for the central locking/alarm). I approached a motor vehicle locksmith but his quote was higher than the eventual cost of supplying and programming a second key (plus reprogramning the remote) at a Mazda main dealer (John Pearse in Chelmsford).

It took an hour or so and cost £70 including VAT after MX5OC discount…

£40 at Timpsons included the programmingThumbs up

One of the annoying differences between the Mk2 and the Mk2.5 is that the unit in the car has to be reprogrammed at the same time as the key(s). I’m willing to stand corrected but I do not believe High Street locksmiths can reprogramme the unit in the car.

The change was made in the interests of greater security, but that doesn’t make it any more palatable. I should have kicked up more of a fuss when I bought the car with only one key - the dealer tried to prise it out of the former owner but he didn’t respond to letters.

I’d recommend anyone considering a Mk2.5 to make sure it has two keys and a remote as a condition of purchase or negotiate a significant reduction in the price for that alone (c£250-300?)

I have two keys but no remote - is it standard?

I have 2 keys and a remote for my 2.5 which has an alarm .

A few folks over at MX5 nutz have claimed they have had there key copied and cloned at Timpsons without isue, and full refund if it is unsuccessful.

I spoke to one near work, but they are only open office hours and I cant get time off work so going on Sat morning.

They said they can, as long as I have the original key.  So sounds promising.  I beleive they clone a chip/transponder and place into the new key.

i have one key, no remote, and also wondered if my car came with a remote, and maybe was just never given one.

Mine does have central locking via key and alarm.

But just key’s at the moment.

I am told it was 190 for a new key and fob with programming included.  For 10 more I could have a Cobra, Toad, Viper CAT 1 full closure alarm. Which I am more drawn towards seeing it does bring insurance (be it a few quid) down a little.

Weighing up my options.

I dont, i was told it was a optional extra?  Remote central locking hence the fob remote.  Dont know if mine was one of those? Can ask the dealer to see if they have records of mine having a fob via the chasis number. but then its 190 for a new one I beleive.

I think the problem is that mazda made so many special edition cars, with different specs. , some had remote central locking, some had alarms, others had both. some were extras and some standard Confused, my euphonic, has an alarm and remote central locking that can also be activated by the key.

A little research at http://www.mx5-mazda.co.uk/ suggests that all special editions from 2002 onwards had an alarm and immobiliser as standard.

If my 2003 Nevada (sounds virtually identical to Gonzomagic’s) is typical, it should have two keys and a remote.

I don’t see why a Cobra alarm in place of the OEM alarm/immobiliser should cut the insurance costs. How does it protect the car any better?

Remotes do appear on ebay from time to time but great care has to be taken to ensure it is the right one - there are threads on this on this site and elsewhere. But they do go for less than £190.

The remote can be programmed without going to a dealer. The keys cannot. If you have two keys you can buy a blank (certainly from a dealer and possibly from a high street locksmith) and programme it to work with the alarm/immobiliser.

I was very uncomfortable with just one key. Lose it and you’re seriously stuffed…

If you only have one key, it, a new key and the car must be reprogrammed - you cannot programme a second key if you only have one.

As a matter of interest I wonder if Mazda sold any 2.5s from 2002 until the end of the line that were not special editions of one sort or another?

My euphonic was described in the original brochure as having an alarm  and immobiliser, which the brochure said was only available with the option  pack on the standard 1.6 and 1.8 cars that were still being supplied in 2004, the alarm is remote controlled and that was not supplied with said option pack on standard cars, which only had the keys.

Of Course other special additions may have had remote alarms too, i have no time to check this at the moment but your link will verify that i expect.

Insurance companies think that alarms like the cobra and others are worth a discount on premiums, over standard fitments, i remember i had a sophisticated system on one of my cars that a previous owner had paid a lot of money for, it saved me very little on my premium though from memory.

Well a Cobra is a CAT 1, Thatcham approved.  I dont think the factory one is CAT 1 Thatcham approved.  Hence the insurance is cheaper if approved.

Thanks for the info, I will see if I can have a look to see if I can find a fob.  That might be all i need.

I ordered a blade key yesterday, with a hole in the middle (assume it is for the transponder), so needs cutting and transponder placed inside.

I am the same, uncomfortable with the one key hence wanting to go forward, and sort a backup plan.

indeed, i wouldnt bother.  It costs £50-100 more for a CAT 1 alarm to buy and fit.  To save around £10-15 a year I beleive. So 9-10 years to break even for a ROI.

But if a new fob from Mazda is £190 (brand new, hassle free approach), i am better off going for a CAT 1, as it gives me that remote that i want but as a bonus a pager function in more newer alarms that tells me at the key what is going on with the car if alarm triggered. Along with options such as keyless entry, remote engine start, boot popper, comfort module (full closure, windows close) that I assume were never available on the standard alarm.

See, these are the things I have been considering, and I consider alot, before parting with cash.

Cant beat cheap though.

Or FREE, thats the sh1z.

Right, after going to my local, he said he cant do it as it was a 2.5 as it may need a specifc transponder.  So gave me the details of their Dartford branch, apprently specialist in coded keys.  So i thought hmm, it was a 17 mile drive, came home rang around to see if anyone could locally, but either no answer or no can do, Rang beofre I went and said they CAN do it, just jumped in the car and went to the ‘specialist’ Timpsons.  :frowning: got their he could read the key but could not write. His paper work said he can do a mk2 but not a 2.5 (well 02-05 years).  And 2.5 need coding on both car and key, but he wasnt 100%.  Said I could pop back with v5 and he could try the keys deparment during the week but nowt he could do on the weekend and not something they can do their and then.

so looks like markocosic is spot on.

So wasted trip. Besides dealer dont know now who can do so.

I’m surprised a dealer can’t do it. Just to confirm that John Pease in Chelmsford supplied a key and programmed it and my original key to my car (and reprogrammed my remote) for £70 (of which supplying the key was £45).

It took a little over an hour to do, but I had to order the key in advance and it took about 10 days to come in.

Frankly I think that it is not such a bad thing that keys can’t be cut in Timpsons any more - even if it is a littloe more expensive.

Thanks mate, its looking like the aproach I will be taking

I’ve just bought a 51 reg with one key - Is this what’s classed as a 2 or a 2.5? Confused I notice on here someone refers to the 2.5 as being after 2002?

If I’m reading this right Timpsons might be able to help me - but I am tempted to go the dealer route and find out if mine has remote locking capability at the same time.
