MK 2.5 NB gearbox oil change

What oil does everyone put in their gearboxes? My mx has does nearly 70,000 miles now and is probably over due for a change, how much do they hold and is it a fairly straight forward job?

many thanks

Cannot go wrong with Syntrans 75-90.

Smooths what can be a nasty obstructive cold-changer.

On the gearbox, make sure you undo the correct nuts!

Starting with the refill, not the drain…and if you get that wrong…you’ll lose gear selectors.

Can’t recall quantities…it’s in the handbook.

Cheers mate

If it is the 5 speed you need a 14mm open end spanner to remove the square filler and some PTFE tape to wrap the thread in when you put it back, Ir does not use a crush washer.

You must crack that first.

Get a new crush washer for the 5 speed box drain plug.
The 6 speed needs two crush washers.

If you have a 6 speed box you have to be careful.

Workshop manuals for both boxes here

Most people just put in a 75W90 GL5 in the 5 speed or a GL4 if you want. Mazda specify both.

Mazda specify a 75W/90 GL4 oil for the six speed.

2 litres will be fine.

If the gear change is a bit clunky as Robin mentioned there are two oils that are too spec at running temperature but much thiner than most other gear oils at low tempretures so may give a better change when cold but that is not a given.

They are Redline MT90
Castrol Syntrans Multivehicle 75W/90 GL4 if you are wanting that do not buy any other Castrol 75W/90 oil.

Thanks Eddie…I was wrongly assuming it may be a 6 speeder.

The 75/90 GL4 transformed our Sport’s 6 speeder after your advice a while back.

It’s a quiet “snicker” now…but then we had a bad one.
