Hi all - I did search for this but couldn’t find it. My passenger airbag sensor is flashing at me (code 47 I think). Is it just a case of shorting the plug out under the seat?

No definitely not . Minimum required is resistor to bypass the seatbelt but it should be replaced if its faulty in case of accident airbags will not activate if seatbelt is not functioning properly We have good used seatbelt if you need it. Easy to replace takes abut 30 minutes
Code 47 is a fault in the occupancy sensor in the base of the passenger seat, not the seatbelt.
Try wiggling the plug under the seat. It may have got pulled
It’s also worth turning off the passenger side with the key switch to see if 1) it stops the light and 2) resetting it to on clears the problem. I have done this with a code 22 on a Mk3 and its not come back so possibly an oxidised switch contact or simply resetting the system. Another idea is to sit in and out of the passenger seat a few times to operate the sensor and see if it clears.
Passenger Airbag Deactivation (PAD) switch on NB cars.
Yes, there’s a similar airbag key-switch on Mk3 too. Mechanical switch contacts are self-cleaning and like to be used occasionally so always worth a go.
The car is Mk2.5 from the op signature so should have PAD. There are 2 lights I think, 1 for Airbag and seatbelt pretensioner, and another with beeper for the seatbelt being fastened. The airbag light shows fault codes by flashing long and short but I don’t think the seatbelt light shows codes. The op wasn’t sure if it was a 47 but a 49 airbag light is for the PAD. Given the cost of checking (nothing) it is worth doing!
Sorry, that should have read “No Passenger Airbag Deactivation (PAD) switch on NB cars.”
Damn, it is my AIRBAG not the seatbelt! Original post updated.
The plug is secure, I’ve had the seat out completely and made sure it was put back in properly.
I’ll try switching it off with the key - where is it? (I think Roadster Robbie is saying there isn’t one?)
Oh heck, my mistake too, if as Robbies says there’s no switch on a Mk2. The US NBs have one alongside the cigar lighter ahead of the gear stick. Bit naughty that if they have a passenger airbag and no switch? How many kids get carried in the front by young mums I wonder??
If all else fails Autolink sell an occupancy sensor emulator. I hope I have the name correct! This plugs in to bypass the seat occupancy sensor as I understand it. Around £40. details on their website. It would seem to be a common fault if someone is manufacturing these devices.

About the on/off switch; I have a 2003 MX5 wiring diagram and it does show a passenger deactivation switch although I just double-checked my car and I can’t see one.
However I can’t see an occupancy sensor on the wiring diagram at all.
So, I need an “occupancy sensor emulator”. Surely that should read “seat switch”…? Either there’s a passenger sitting there or there isn’t. Or is that too simple?
Yes a bit of a mystery. The US owners book and wiring diagram show the switch, and deactivation is referred to in the UK brochure on the Mazda UK site,
http://www.mazda.co.uk/assets/uk/usedcars/brochures/mx5_brochure_2005.pdf
A couple of thoughts. We need to be careful messing with airbags but it wouldn’t hurt to deactivate them by removing the neg battery lead (may need code for radio) for 10 mins then reconnecting to see if it re-sets anything in the module or computer. Whilst they’re deactivated perhaps try and find as many connectors as poss and re-plug them in case it’s a bad connection.
At the same time perhaps have a look in the loom region under the dash,
http://www.jonathansblog.net/mx-5_mazda_how_to_disable_passenger_side_airbag
and see if the coloured wires for the switch are there as per the drawing, in the case of the one I have; white and black/red for the switch, and light green and black/yellow for the indicator light, which go to ground and the SAS moodule. It’s possible the switch wiring is there (for other markets) but no switch.
There are 2 sensors in the seat, one to detect if a passenger is sitting there and one to detect if a Mazda approved child seat is installed.
I have just checked my wiring diagrams and they show a deactivation switch for the passenger airbag. But, the diagrams are for the Miata. On checking my handbook it agrees with Robbies post, no real surprise there! It states:- When a child restraint system designed for Mazda’s air bag cut-off system is installed on the passenger seat or if the passenger seat is not occupied, the air bag cut-off system deactivates the passenger airbag and the seat belt pretensioner system of the passenger seat. So, no switch for the UK market it would appear!

We have passenger airbag if you need it
Just thinking, I probably should have mentioned this earlier!!! But the fault (code 47) only shows when someone is sitting in the seat. All is quiet with an empty seat, just when it’s occupied.
Does that make any difference to the problem?
Anyone?
Makes no difference, code 47 is code 47…
