Having completed 27,000 miles with my Mk.2.5, I have decided it is time to check the valve clearances. The Haynes Manual suggests that the oil feed pipe for the V.V.T. requires removing from the engine, in order to facilitate removal of the cam cover. Looking at the layout, that task would appear to be an overkill and quite difficult to access the lower bolt on the cylinder block ? Instead, my plan will be to simply remove the upper banjo bolt.
Additionally, Haynes continues to advise that the V.V.T. Oil Control Valve requires removing from the cam cover, which , to me, appears to be unnecessary?
Whilst the cover is removed, I intend to clean the external surface to improve the appearance. Having worked with high performance engines all of my life, I’m well aware of the dangers of using any form of sand blasting; rather I would just like to return the cover to something akin to when I purchased the car new. Has anyone got a recommendation for a first class DIY Cleaning Agent / de-greaser and where I might purchase - Frosts?
Finally, Haynes suggests that sealant should be applied to the areas adjacent to the cam bearing caps, at front and rear. I intend to contact a new gasket from MX5 Spares and will ask for their recommendation, unless someone out there has a good recommendation?
Any comments and suggestions on all, or parts of the above would be gratefully received
