Pics not working for me.
If you put them on Photobucket then it’s probably the worse choice to upload your pics to, try Postimage much more user friendly and easy to use.
Edit… now working
Not the worse front chassis rails I’ve seen but they are on the way to rusting out. If you can’t get a poky thing through the rusty bits and they are solid then maybe they could be saved from futher rust damage. Of course the rust starts inbetween the sandwich, two layers of steel bonded together, getting to that will be impossible. If it were me Iwould be wanting to see that rust in the flesh before deciding on the purchase or not.
Looks like there’s been a bit of patching & welding to me
thanks guys…owner said no welding or paintwork but he’s selling it…appreciate the advice from you guys though as im a bit of a novice
There’s no welding there and treated quickly it’s likely to be OK.

As said, far from the worst case seen. However, if the rest of the car is solid you will only know by checking rear sills & arches because “surface bubbling” often heralds the eruption of inside-out rot which is between £4/600.00 per side done properly. Chassis patch sections are cheap & avaliable but don’t hang around too long about that.
5’s, once the rot takes hold, dissolve like asprins in boiling water.
I ought to know. I have two. One sorted, one about to.

None of my business, but the asking price would be an important consideration. Some MK2 owners have an inflated sense of their values. This will need repairing at some point, if the sills are also showing signs of bubbling, and most do, the repairs will reach well over £1000.
Hi pfw
The photo’s show the side of the chassis which judging by my car might not be the most corroded area.
Below is a photo of the chassis section that I cut from my own car. You can see the bolt holes (and drilled out spotweld) where the ARB was mounted and can see an
area of rust beside it that hasn’t yet become a hole, but the worst area by far that has rusted through is the underside of the chassis.
You need a mirror, or the camera on your phone to examine this area when looking to buy a car.
I did the repair work around Christmas and put several photo’s on here. Did the job for under £100 and that included metal, new drop links, and a couple of rattle cans.
Hope this helps.

Looks to me like there is no weld they have been bodged with fibreglass.
‘Looks to me like there is no weld they have been bodged with fibreglass.’
On careful examination of the photographs, what looks like strands of fiberglass appear to be scratches in the metal.
Thanks for all the replies, car was £3000 lowest he would take but from the comments above and bearing in mind I would have to pay to have the work done {if needed} I think I will give it a miss
At that price, a mk2 would have to be near perfect. Half that is more realistic.
Thought as much…cheers
As what you can see in the photos is the outside, and where the rust is coming from is on
the inside, which will be worse…, then the rails are basically on their way out.
You could sand and rust treat what you can see ( Is the double skin internal section accessible
by wax/rust killer ? ) … But if the rust is still coming through from the inside, I’d say the car is good for the next
MOT, but after that you’re looking at the biggish bills for new rail sections.
