Mk 3.5 2010 sport tec Mazda ipod integration

Hi, I have just had the mazda ipod integration module and lead fitted to my 2010 Sport tec (Bose) and think I can clarify a number of issues posted on other threads.

Firstly, I wanted a clean integration that was not visible.  I also wanted to be able to view track names etc on the cars display, and use the standard buttons.  Having researched it there were not many options that gave me everything I wanted and the Mazda information was very scant.

It was not helped when I rang round three local Mazda dealers and got different answers and prices from all of them. (One asked me if it was a petrol or diesel model!).

I eventualy decided to have the unit supplied and fitted by Nunns Mazda of Grimsby, they offered a fair price of £243 fitted, less 10% for MX5 OC members.

It has been fitted a week now, and i have tried a variety of ipods with it, it works great with al of them, ipod nano third generation, ipod 160 Gb 6th generation, and iphone 4, despite mazda saying it does not work with any iphone.  I will try the iphone 5 when I get an apple 30 pin to lightening adapter.

Access to the ipod menus is by pressing the Aux button, first press selects Aux, second press selects ipod, allclearly displayed on the head unit.

With the iphone 4, music can be acessed via the stereo controls, and the bluetooth integration continues to work, it also charges the phone.

The big difference between this and the integration fitted to my Volvo, is that the Mazda does not have enter and back buttons to operate the menus, instead the Mazda has differnt controls for each level of the  menu’s.

Top level menu is controlled by the tuner knob, (Artist. Album, Genre etc.)

Second level menu is controlled by the foldet up/down buttons, (Adele, Aerosmith, Beyonce etc.)

Third level menu is controlled by the track/seek buttons, (Song titles)

This is a bit fiddly to use initially but quickly becomes second nature.

Overall it is better than I expected, titles and artists are clearly displayed and the text button allows you to flip between artist, title etc.

I know there are other options out there, and everyone will choose the one for them, but I am quite hapy with this fitment.

Having struggled for information I hope this posts helps.

Nice explanation Binty.

Thanks for that. I wanted to be able to operate my iPod from the stereo/steering wheel controls the same as yourself, for my Mk 3 and I ended up having a new Kenwood head u it fitted. It’s fine but I would probably have chosen your option had I realised this was possible at the time.

That’s very interesting, I’ve only just started using an MP3 player Sad and was sticking to CDs in various past cars but only recently realised the advantages of having my cd collection on an mp3 player in the MX  (lack of space for cd storage) and being able to mix and match various tunes into one MP3 player if you see what I mean. However,  I have another car, a Hyundai i10, the basic model which has an USB port on the radio. So I took a chance and plugged in the very primitive, reddmango 2GB mp3 stick(distained by the grand kiddies)  with which I had been trying to learn the intricasies  of Win Media player, and how to organise  and download tunes them into the Reddmango with varying degrees of success.

Lo and behold on the Hyundai radio’s screen came the  names and info on the bits and pices I had downloaded into it, but of course, only the tunes I had downloaded in mp3 format would play. I’m learning Confused.

Went to look at the MX but of course no USB portCry.  I came across your post,  you seem to have solved the problem but at a price which is above my present budget. A silly question perhaps, is there a cheaper or simpler way of doing it ? I’ve recently ordered a SanDisk Clip Zip 4GB MP3 Player which seems to have good reviews, and I require compatability, but for all I know they may all be compatible with each other ? Confused

You could use an FM transmitter. Have a look at something like the Griffin iTrip.
I used one in a previous car and it worked well, but of course you don’t get the track names displayed on the car radio.

Hi Gales,

If you can manage without the dispay on the head unit, there are quite a few options, FM ransmitter is one, but you can also just plug the 3.5mm headphone socket on the MP3 player into the cars 3.5mm AUX socket next to the 12v power socket in the dash.  Downside is it will not chage your player.

There are loads of devices on ebay that will be compatable with your player, and charge it at the same time, but will generally require you to plug it in via the AUX socket.  For neatness you can always install an extra 12v socket in the bulkhead hatch or centre console out of site, quite easy to do for under £10.

Mazda also do a cheaper version that charges and plays but without the head unit display.  I have not priced it up.

God luck

Hey binty,

Is this the module you have by any chance? It doesn’t say anything about controlling the music from the DIN unit.

This sounds like such a better solution than picking up and using my iPod in my car manually!

Hi Ewar,

Checking my invoice, they fitted an ipod adapter BBM279CFZA and a C9FAV6029 ipod adapter harness.

Prices (plus VAT) were Adapter £60.89 (£73.07), harness £54.07 (£64.88) and labour £67.50 (£81.00)  Total inc VAT £218.95

These prices benefitted fom 10% MX5OC discount.

I think the Mazda info is awful, no real answers at all, and most dealers do not seem to know anything except what is on the website. Good thing is the product does work well!

Good luck

Well good news is the BBM279CFZA is what I linked so I’m going to go ahead and get one.

Probably fit it myself is Mazda want to charge £67 labour!

Thanks for this topic, didn’t even know Mazda had this accesory

Hi Binty
Can you tell me please if your Bose unit is the one that plays MP3s? I’m assuming that my Bose unit would not display the track names etc that the ipod/ iphone was playing as it isn’t the MP3-playing version. It also does not have the AUX port in the dash as seems to be generally assumed.
Could be a useful bit of info for those of us considering your option.
I live near Nunns and always found them to be very helpful, but as you say, there is very little info from Mazda
