Mk 3.5 Aux in question

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC 3.5 PHRT
  2. I’m based near: __Preston
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Aux in__

I recently fitted a Sony Double DIN Head Unit (XAV-AX5650) and find that my Aux no longer works. The Unit does not have an Aux in but does have two USB’s so ordered a USD to Phono adaptor. However it would be better to use the existing Aux in connection. Anybody any ideas on why it no longer works or what I could do to reinstate?

Presumably, you want to connect your phone.
If the new unit has no facility to connect the aux in socket, could it be that it isn’t reckoned to need one because you can use Bluetooth??

As said by 999to5 - the aux port was connected in to your old head unit.
When you removed the old head unit - there was no where to plug the connector for the aux port.

If you are handy with electronics - you could possibly wire the old aux port to a usb plug and feed music in that way.

But - it is generally easier to bluetooth stream OR load all your music on to a usb drive and play it off that.

You don’t state for what purpose you want the auxiliary socket for?
I can’t think (with that Sony unit) you’d want to connect anything via an aux.

On that note, I’ll check mine, I wonder if it’s disabled now I’ve got a Pioneer fitted. Never really used it since I got the car.

Thanks everyone. I should have said its to connect to a battery powered portable CD Player. Old School I know. I had planned to use the second USB to connect to a USB CD Player I use in my wife’s car but unfortunately the second Sony USB dies not provide enough power. To many CD’s to copy plus don’t want a subscription service. Not sure they would have Steppenwolf’s greatest hits anyway!

There is a Steppenwolf’s greatest hits playlist on Spotify you don’t need a subscription - just a suggestion😉

Spotify, it’s free👍

Ok it’s with ads for the basic version (it’s what I have) plus Deezer and Amazon music.

Imvho, replacing your head unit with double din and teaming it up with a battery cd player is a bit like buying a Tesla and sticking lead acid batteries in it.
Loading your music collection into I player and transferring it to your phone is a bit tedious but well worth it. You can even have the album covers displayed.
A job for a rainy afternoon or pay a grandchild 20 p per album to do it for you

Ha, did I mention my Grandsons favourite CD “Song Time with the Mr Men”? What memories the grandkids will have loading CD’s and DVD’s at Grandads house / car. Yes they do travel in the MX5, Airbag switched off.
I thought I had a solution buying a cheap USB to phono lead to connect the portable CD player. “USB Not supported” says the Sony Unit. Wish I had gone for the Panasonic.
Re copying, to be honest its freeing up the time. My priority when I get some is replacing the DAB Aerial. I used the very neat Puck installation fitted under the speaker grill used by CBRDeano, unfortunately the reception is very poor. My wife’s Astra parked next to my MX5 is much better. I know its worked for CBRDeano so maybe I, and others, have got a dud aerials.
Question, is it possible to change the DAB Aerial lead without taking out he head Unit?
Thanks again everyone for your comments. Regards Glenn

This page from the manual shows that the dab aerial is connected directly in the back of the head unit so yes - the unit will need to come out to swap aerials.

Thanks Dean, Thought so. Might buy a small dab aerial extension lead and fit that. I can then play with different aerials. Regards Glenn

Not sure how your unit is mounted - but if anything like mine I can have the head unit out in sub 5 mins to gain access to the connections on the back.

Remove two side trims - remove two side screws in the facia - draw facia out of the dash.

Hi Dean, wish you lived next door! Ordered a DAB SNB extension lead that I will fit when I pull the head out. I will also install the Sony Lead for USB 2 as the aftermarket lead and panel socket may also be a problem. However is ok with my USB Memory stick. (Yes, I do have some music on a stick, albeit my daughters playlist). My plan is to short term install the adhesive window aerial that came with the unit on the Perspex wind break. Longer term I need to decide what non windscreen mounted aerial I want. Let me know if you have seen any other Puck type aerials. I did spot an amplified one but cannot find again. Thanks again everybody for your help.
Regards Glenn

Not used one but this looks like the oem aerial and has 5m cables so it would reach the head unit.

Thanks Dean, question, do you know if the amplified wire is connected to the amplifier lead on the existing radio? I note the Sony Head Unit has a switched power supply which appears to be fed through the DAB Aerial Lead. Regards Glenn

You would just pick up the power wire from the existing aerial ( it is amplified already )

Tanya. Unfortunately plus £8-00 delivery. Still cheaper than Halfords but will probably go there as they are local.

Good news Dean, I don’t need to move next door! !0 minutes and 9 screws to pull the head unit forward to get access to the leads etc. Then 50 Minutes to swap out the leads including removing the glove box and refitting. Interestingly the reception has improved. Probably due to moving the Aerial lead over to the drivers side plus the extra 1 meter of cable for the extension. Need to have a proper run tomorrow to check overall reception . Temporary fitted the Glass Aerial to the wind blocker but did not seem to make any difference. Need to check earths etc.
