MK 3.5 non bose stereo - "check cd" error

Hello all, hoping someone may be able to help me out. 

I have a Mk 3.5 MX-5 - had for about 18 months now. 

Last month, out of the blue, the CD player stopped working. Instead of playing the CD, it just says “check cd” on the screen. Every other mode works just fine. 

I have tried normal shop-bought CD’s, mp3 CD’s, clean, brand new - still no luck. 

I’ve done a battery disconnect and re-set - and the error is the same. 

I have the standard stereo - non-bose and the CD’s eject just fine - and I can’t hear any mechanical noise or anything else. 

Has anyone had this before or have any tips to fix it?

Doesn’t sound good. I had the same with the CD player in the MX5 I bought earlier this year. I gave up trying to sort it out but found and bought a cheap but identical replacement on thE bay. About £30.

I also have a Mk3.5 but have had the same problem on my Volvo. I just moved the same 2 CDs around in the 6 slots and kept trying and the problem disappeared.

It’s just a one CD player so no hope of swapping around. If it’s £30 I’m not too bothered- just got to find the right part as I’ve got the aux in also.
