MK 3 - Air Filter

Evening, I’m keen to hear from people who have just replaced the air filter and seen improvements to the MK3. I have a 2.0

There are a few on the market offering to improve airflow 15 - 30%. Any one using them and noticed a difference. I’m not sure if I should just go to a full induction kit but I’m also aware that the pipercross panel goes onto the Max5 cars without a full induction kit so can’t be much to gain from changing?

Cheers

Jack

IMHO there’s little to be gained on the MK3 from changing the air flow/filtering unless you’re doing some kind of FI at the same time.

I fitted a Pipercross panel filter about 18 months ago to my ''07 2.0 sport. It replaced a new pattern air filter and I noticed an improvement in throttle response and the car sounded a bit better.

I refitted the paper air filter after 6 months but found the car a bit ‘flat’ with it fitted and returned to the Pipercross which made the car feel far crisper on the throttle.

I don’t think there was any extra power but my car seemed to drone a bit with the paper fitter whereas it just felt and sounded much more enjoyable with the Pipercross.

I have an ITG drop in panel air filter, supposed to filter out much more contaminants. My only negativity with this kind of upgrade is that, being installed vertically as on the mk3, the filtration oil seeps to the bottom and out of the panel into the air suction housing (not the engine side thank goodness). I do feel I get a good accelerator response with this filter and overall I think it works well although I  haven’t yet checked  for build up of dirt around the mass flow chamber which some have reported while using this kind of product.

In the USA many are choosing now to replace the paper filter at much shorter intervals instead of going for an upgrade.

Thanks guys, think i’ll get one ordered this week as sounds positive

I have fitted a Pipercross air filter recently. I am not sure whether it has any performance impact but my insurance premium went up as my previous insurer would not accept the mod!

Fair point, you do need to declare it, as its engine related some insurers will up your premium…

Yes my insurance quote on confused.com was £2 dearer with the upgraded filter. Thumbs Up

Found some interesting facts about installing an upgraded panel filter here.

This paragraph in particular.

What filter should I use for my car?
If you a looking just to replace your existing filter that sits inside the OE housing then you should consider ourPro Filter range. These filters offer better flow at low engine speeds and so will offer improvements to throttle response, torque and fuel consumption over the original paper element. They will not offer you increases in peak horsepower due to the restriction placed on the engine on the size of the pipes/ducting that takes the air to the filter as these are designed at the size they are by the manufacturer to reduce noise and emissions.

And this one

Do you want an induction kit to replace your OE airbox and produce more power? Whilst itg make a large range of Maxogen® remote filters, when these are fitted directly to or close by airflow meters they will suck in a great deal of hot air. So despite sounding loud your car will in fact lose power compared to the original manufacturer system unless the remote filter is shielded in some way from the radiant heat produced by the engine and can receive a good supply of ambient air externally from the car. We produce a range of top quality high performance intake systems where the filter is protected from the heat of the engine bay by fitting it inside an air box and providing it with a supply of ambient air to improve internal combustion inside your engine. The improvement in power can be as much as a 10% improvement in peak power or by as much as 12bhp.
