Hi everyone.
Taking our mx5 mk3 on a road trip in sept, touring cornwall for a week or so and then over to the isle of wight for 4 days. Might need a bit more space for luggage and looking at a boot rack. However I am not prepared to pay £150 plus for a luggage rack which to be honest is only a small part and a horrendous rip off. Anyone got any tips for getting one cheaper or do you have one tucked away in your man cave to exchange for a reasonable amount of beer tokens (cash), please help, thank you.
I don’t know what you are trying to carry so hear me out on this one:
MX5 parts do a budget one for less than £150 in comparison with the Mazda one which is above £200! http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/boot-luggage-rack-budget-mk335-soft-only-p-2772.html
Or I suppose you could do a boot bag which is far less! http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/boot-original-waterproof-luggage-p-2852.html
Plus if you bought either today you can get further discount with it being the bank holiday (10% from memory).
I assume yours is a soft top as a PRHT would not allow the boot rack.
YES you can fit a boot rack to a MK3 and a MK3.5 with the folding hard top even though MX5parts say you can’t.
A forum member has one fitted to his, the one with the integral brake light.
And the issue with it is that is clears it with just enough clearance over the bar as even the yanks have proven meaning anything you put on the rack which is over the height of the bar is then in the way of the rear panel that lifts up and crucially backwards. It is not just mx5 parts that say that but Mazda altered it from both soft top and RC to soft top only.

I could of shown that to as well, but it does not display the issue once the rack is in use with an item that is taller than the bar at the front of the rack.
This is where the issue begins as the Americans have highlighted to great effect:
Thanks ninja59. My problem is with the price of the racks. So expensive for such a small piece of kit. Not prepared to pay 150+ for one of these.
Personally if it were me I would go for the bootbag solution sitting on the boot if you don’t need to much stuff to be carried.
