Mk 3 hardtop fitting?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: mk 3
  2. I’m based near: Stoke on Trent__
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __fitting a hardtop what parts do I need ?.

This lot - see photo
Frankenstein bolts - fit through the chrome plates each side of the rear panel
Catches for side clips
Cutaway side trims to accommodate these catches
Power lead for HRW
fitkit

You’ll need a lot of money

Just thought I could get a hardtop for Winter to just bolt on and leave hood on didn’t think it was complicated…?

NC hardtops are rare, because the PRHT model came out in 2007 so the convertible + hard top wasn’t a popular option at about £1500* - the PRHT came with “free” aircon and was only about £2k* more so most people went for that.

*From memory…

You can pick up a hard top on Ebay for £5-700 for a decent one but the fittings, which were fitted as standard on NA & NB models, are about £200 extra (when you can get them). I paid £510 for my hard top, but I was really lucky that it was still on the seller’s car and he was happy for me to swap the fittings - easy enough job and only took half an hour - but most hard tops are for sale because the car’s already gone. Some chancers ask £8-900 for top + kit on Ebay, but whether they actually sell them at price is debatable.

I’ve recently sold one of my hardtops for £575 with just the Frankenstein bolts. Current price for the full fitting kit is £350 from mx5parts but you dont need the full kit just the bolts and buy jass performance side brackets about £50 for the pair, no need for the front brackets as the factory front latch is ok. Only other part is the wiring harness for the HRW at £20 so £70 should be cost for fitting kit. If you still fancy a hardtop try Aaron Savage on mx5 mk3 Facebook as he gets a few to sell

Good info that :+1:

BTW - I know the side plastic trims can be modded, but it’s hard to do it neatly…

PS the front latch is in fact MUCH better than the 2 on my NB!

These are the jass side brackets and only need a minor cut in the side plastic covers

No offence, I know they’re a lot cheaper than the OEM, but they do look a bit “home-made” in comparison IMHO

That’s fine, the OEM Mazda side brackets and catches are a bit of a faff to use imo

That’s because they are home made.
With the Mazda kit you just unlatch and lift off, not need to mess around undoing bolts.
