Mk1 1.8 Thermostat two options which one

I am looking to change the radiator on my Mk1 1.8 and at the same time change the thermostat while it is all drained down
there appears to be two types
Mazda MX5 MK1 1.8 & MK2 Thermostat 88 & Gasket (Bleed Valve) 1993>2005

Mazda MX5 MK1 & MK2 Thermostat 82 & Gasket Set 1989>05

Is there a way of knowing which one without taking the old one off

On introduction of the 1.8, a two stage thermostat was used, the opening temperature of the main thermostat being 86.5-89.5, so I’d guess that the 88 one is the one that you’re after (assuming 88 is the opening temperature). From December’94 it returned to a single stage thermostat but with the same opening temperature range.
