MK1 Big Brake conversion how too??

Hi All,

I am about to pull the brakes off a donor mk2.5 SVT to transfer onto the MK1 Turbo build, but I am struggling to find a how to?  Is there one available?  I assumed that LOADS of people must have completed this??

Any help appreciated, thank you!

It has been done but not that common for the MK1 as not enough power/weight to warrant unless turbo.

Rob from Ireland mx5 123 could advise as he has completed this job - here is a thread

It seems that carriers, calipers, discs and pads are all required. You could transfer the hubs across too to cover the dust shield issue and longer front brake pipes required.

I would expect the servo and master cylinder would also be required.

Not aware of a a useful howto anywhere so I would PM Rob to get the full SP on this

Rhino, thank you for the help!! I will drop Rob a quick PM

Maybe its worth me pulling together a how to as I go!

Loads of threads when you look:

The best conversions include changing the master cylinder as well, and proportioning valve. Watch out for wheel fitment; some 15" wheels will need the calipers ground off a bit, or spacers fitted.

I was looking for a howto guide which is what the OP was after. Will have another look later.

Still can’t find a definitive guide on this. I think the problem is too many variations of thought on how this needs to be done.

I did find this thread on Nutz that is quite interesting. It seems you may be able to simply install the basic parts - discs, carriers, calipers, pads, front hoses and get a good result without having to change the servo, master cylinder and install the proportioning valve. Only bugbear that may add time is sorting out the dust shields.

These brakes are really good but I’ve seen sets in dreadful condition, so my first job would be to clean the carriers and calipers up and replace any parts that will let you down.
