Mk1 Cobalt Exhaust rattle

Hi Guys,

so I purchased a Cobalt single exit for my Mk1 1.6 Eunos, it seemed to fit well until I come to drive it and it rattles like hell.

upon further insp it’s touching the bottom of the diff and rattling against the ‘brace bar’, really annoyed as I heard nothing but good reviews.

hope someone can help?

Cheers,

Shane.

Are the rubber hangers all OE Mazda and in good condition? Is the car fitted with a factory cat, or something aftermarket?

i purchased some replacement rubbers from CES as I expected the original to be worn, both the replacement and new rubbers don’t seem to make a difference.

Everything looks standard including the CAT.

CES? Whats that? Are they aftermarket? Is the subframe brace OE Mazda (ie the car is 1991 or newer) or after market (ie the car is pre 1991)?

You can always send the exhaust back to Moss for an exchange.

CES is our local car parts shop, the rubbers were aftermarket.

the car is a 1989, I think the biggest problem is that it’s rubbing against the diff, don’t know how I can get around that?

Incalled moss this morning, they basically told me they’d 1000s of them exhausts and never had an issue

After market hangers are frequently no good; best stick to OE Mazda. The exhaust is banging on the diff because the hangers aren’t really stetching. If you have a mixture of OE and pattern hangers, try swapping them around a bit.

Moss are correct; its premature to blame the exhaust before checking that the cheap rubber hangers are correct. Do that before following else’s advise that involves bending exhaust brackets. Try fitting the OE rubbers on the back box only, to see if that drops a bit to clear your diff.

As a 1989 car, there was never a rear subframe brace fitted, and without changing subframes, its not possible to fit the factory brace, so whatever you have is aftermarket. Its well known that many aftermarket braces foul aftermarket exhausts.

Who fitted the exhaust? bit of adjustment and attention may be the answer

I fitted the exhaust myself, it’s jammed tight against the the diff, I can try different rubbers but I’d be surprised if they push it down with enough force?

Can the rear brace bar be removed safely?

well there you go!!

…always best to get  professionals who know exactly what they are doing, to fit things like exhausts. Saves a lot of grief, hassle and time.

I’m not claiming to be any sort of professional but I’ve fitted a fair few exhausts and know when something’s not right…

I took it to a local garage and then said rubbers won’t sort it, its too hard pressed against the diff

I have a cobalt back box centre pipe and decat pipe with a 421 manifold and it’s a perfect fit I’m guessing you have a longer or shorter cat that is causing it to touch the diff

sounds interestin, may have to try the decatpipe, which do you have? Does it fit the standard downpipe?

It’s a stainless decat pipe I’m not sure as to the make it could be a cobalt as it looks the same as the rest of the system which defo is I got the lot off ebay for a total of £66
And yes it does fit with a standard down pipe as I had to use mine to pass my mot last year as I was unable to get the lambda sensor out of the old pipe to fit it to the new one in time

You need to measure your cat and if you have the long one and it’s that that’s causing your back box to jam on ya diff then go for a short decat pipe or vice a versa if yours is a short cat

Brill, thanks for your advise, I’ll measure it up tomorrow and post the size.

I’m taking mine off tomorrow as I need to fit a new lambda sensor so ill measure mine and let you know also

Surely better and less hassle to take it into a garage/exhaust specialist and have it sorted quickly and straight away.  Job done!!

As I said, leave it to the pro’s.

I too bought one of these Cobalt systems the last time they were on offer and a new stainless Cat. The Cat supplier went to great lengths to ensure that I was ordering the correct size which in the case of the Eunos is the shortest (375mm) if I remember correctly, telling me that all imports are fitted with this size. All fitted correctly and although the middle box is very close to the frame it does not touch, or rattle when driving.

i see where you’re coming from, but I bought the Mazda so I could do all these things myself, if I’m going to have a garage do it all, I may as well sell up and buy a new car with a warranty and service plan.

Specially for the sake of just adjusting a few things
