Nice. The re-route through a different grommet will have saved a lot of fiddling and the corrosion on that original terminal is really something. Is that the surface that was contacting the PPF? I can’t see that carrying 100+ amps while cranking!
Yes.
I didn’t see the point using the original route, when you’d never see it again.
Just waiting on some new silicone rubber hangers which will hopefully cure the cold start clatter of the ILM exaust.
How did this go for you please as I have a similar issue but not sure where the end of the wire goes after it disappears down the length of the car, rather than just re-crimping the failed connector. So I might replace the whole wire (assuming I can remove the bolt from the PPF).
Hi chaps. Bit of a thread revival here - I was changing my fuel filter last week and noticed the earth PPF strap was in a very bad way! It was clinging on by the skin of its teeth and I might’ve given it a slight ‘tug’. Since, I’ve started to get a few missfire issues so guessing it’s linked.
Question is: do I need to replace to whole cable, or can I cut, re-crimp and re attach back on the chassis?
Any advice would be great. Cheers, Jack
Cables with professionally crimped eyelets were cheaper to buy that me buying a better crimper than the old Halfords one I had. I guess you could cut back and recrimp, if you have a decent tool.
Thanks for the reply. After some closer inspection this evening, I think I’ll go ahead and just replace the full cable as suggested.
What parts (if any) of the old cable do I leave in place?
Cheers
So it’s the part of the cable off the battery end which is a bit confusing (see pic). I can see there is the cable from the battery terminal, then there is a junction where it bolts to the mount next to the battery, then the cable continues to the PPF.
This guy has replaced the cable with new (cable directly under the nut), but it appears he has the old cable running down to the PPF still in place. Of by doing this, and cutting the old cable that runs to the PPF and replacing that section with new, is this correct?
There’s no harm in running another cable in parallel with the existing one. You can leave the existing in place if you like.
Yup, otherwise you are unpicking 30 year old insulation for no gain.
What’s a PPF?
Power Plant Frame. A piece that joins the transmission to the differential. A bit like a torque tube.
Really appreciate all the advice chaps.
My first post on here after purchasing a MK1 1.8 on ITBs last year. Loving the experience so far
what is the ppf?
The question was asked above and answered.
