Mk1 dash top??

evening all, we recently got a mk1 mx5 and I’ve slowly been sorting a few issues. One thing that needs sorted is the top dash part ( the bit that goes from left to right along the windscreen ) it looks like someone has peeled off the cover then painted it in black.

so my questions are

  • can I get a replacement for this?
  • I have the tan interior, should this part of the dash be tan as well, or is it black?
  • How easy is it to take the dash out, or can I get away with this by putting a new panel on?
 Thanks everyone.

Lee

I had the same problem on mine so I bought a tin of paint thinners and very carefully wiped off all the paint and mess then gave it a good wipe down with panel wipe masked it off and painted it with a tin of satin black here’s a couple of pics before and after

I can’t see the pics

And did you spray paint on with a brush?

did they originally come with a vinyl/leather trim?

Anyone else?

Do I need to be a paid up member to view the pics??

No, but gandolfstwin would have to be paying Photobucket.

I assume you have a V-Spec (tan dash). The dash top is painted in the factory, and often peels off. Its supposed to be black.

Solutions are to somehow cover everything up and spray; though a flexible primer is advisable.
Remove dash, and paint
Remove dash and cover top with leather, leathette. Look up Revlimiter’s page on this, and on dash removal.

I’ve just bought an R ltd and have similar issue, looks like its been painted black badly, can see red underneath, thought it was supposed to be black in that area under windscreen

If you want to do this properly, read through:

I am thinking of getting a tin of this from a well known auction site here is the list number.

Hi sorry I’ve been working away and not had chance to reply I’ll be changing image hosting sites at the weekend so I’ll post some pics of what I did and I’ll explain in detail what I did
I’ve had a look at that eBay item and I’d avoid doing a gloss finish on the dash top if you want to be able to see when the sun’s out ??

Agreed.  I hate dash-top reflections.

Twice I refused to accept a hire car in France because it had a stupid cream or light grey dash top.  The Hertz girl admitted she could not see through the windscreen well enough because of the summer sun on the cream one even to merely take the car out of the airport car park.

In the past, on a couple of my cars I added black felt to the top of the dash because otherwise the reflections in the windscreen were so bad as to make driving unsafe (I complained to the respective car manufacturers in each case without any luck, but noticed later models had ditched the light coloured dash tops so maybe they listened), and I tended to be commuting into the sun which made matters worse.

Even when the felt I added had faded to dirty dark brown, the dull textured surface was still much less visible than a shiny black.

With my NC and its too shiny black dash I found that my Cressi polarised sunglasses offer better clarity in the sun because they effectively cancel out the polarised reflections from the dash (reflected light is always partially polarised and usually horizontally from a horizontal surface), but it is a bit of a lottery if the glasses (usually vertically polarised) are the right kind and the right angle to reduce the reflection seen in the windscreen.

I’m still considering re-painting the binnacle top with a darker matter matte black, or buying a spare one to paint, simply because at night the effect of bright street lights is much the same but polarised glasses are not practical.

There is now a fix for the Photobucket issue:

Not the cheapest solution, but covers up a crack in the top of my MX5 Mk1
