MK1 dashboard tombstone differences

I’ve noticed some mx5’s (Eunos) tombstones are different. There seems to be one that has a recessed radio hole (so radio sits flush with dash), and others where the radio (single din) sits proud/sticks out from dash (same as  my 97 UK MX-5.

What models had the recessed version? I’ve seen it on a 97 SR ltd Eunos (see white one for sale on mx5city) Was the the only one that had it? VR’s etc don’t seem to have it.

I’d really like to change mine to the SR recessed one if possible as prefer the radio sitting flush with the dash. Tried finding one on eBay but no luck so far.

1996+ Eunos Roadsters had this (vin NA8C-400000+), so that will include VR-Limiteds, ie. any Roadster where the hazard light switch is black, rather than red.

MX5Mania in Australia carries it as a new part:

Note, the cubby hole is specific to this part.Normal MX5 cubbys will not fit. The opening is wider, with a step in it.

Or fit a Retrosound radio

Retrosound

That Retrosound Laguna from Moss is a tempting price.

Nice one Saz. Expensive panel for what it is! Really want the radio sitting flush and a cubby hole with clock too. That link to the topic where the owner made his own panel has got me thinking…would the one I have lend itself to having the current hole made bigger, then fabricate a custom panel similar to his fitted into it? Deffo food for thought!

You can fit the radio flush, if you mount it to the radio chassis found in Eunos Roadsters. The bezel will prevent a neat finish. The Americans made a custom bezel

This is a custom racking system; not hard to replicate:

Fit radio to this

And then a custom surround

Same idea, different car

Jass does a few different radio cages:

As SAZ says, a standard single DIN can be fitted flush into the narrower cutout, but its clip-on bezel will be oversize.

When I replaced my first Roadster’s double-DIN Japanese radio/cassette/CD with a single DIN, I made a bracket out of thin aluminium which screwed to the sides of the radio and held it flush, and I trimmed the radio’s clip-on plastic bezel to neatly fill the gap. Still using that bracket after about 20 years, despite several changes of radio and a change of car.

Thanks mate, deffo will give this a go. And good idea trimming the radios  bezel down to fit, think this is just the route I need! Will have a look about in the garage as I’m sure I’ve got some metal that would be perfect for making the brackets. Also been offered a cage that’s the same as the ones used for this from a member on another forum so if they can find it could have the option of using that. Will update Mindy’s topic when I make some progress. Thanks chaps!
