Hi all, I’m away holidaying in Glastonbury at the minute, down from the north east, I noticed a clunking sound coming from the front o/s wheel. On inspection I’ve found the top rubber of the drop link has been pushed through somehow but is still bolted to the anti roll bar and the bottom of the drop link is still attached.
Obviously I’ve got to travel back up to the north east on Monday and I’m worried that something drastic will happen to the suspension.
I have no tools so can’t jack the car and loosen the drop link off and the car drives as normal apart from the clunking noise now as again where I guess the open end of the drop link is hitting the bolt.
Has anyone had this happen and would it be ok driving home, around 400 miles?
Handling may be affected in extreme circumstances but driving with a disconnected drop link will not cause any undue stress on any suspension components. It is an MOT failure though so in theory your car is not ‘roadworthy’ should you get a roadside inspection.
Cheers for that, I sort of thought as much as the handling feels no different but as it’s never happened to me before thought I’d enquire, thanks for the advice.
I would pop into the nearest garage and ask them to remove the link altogether so it does not foul and clunk, order up another one from Autolink or MX5 Heaven ect and have it delivered to your home, the car will be fine to drive on just no sudden slalom course driving till the new one is on…
