MK1 Eunos 1992 ideal tyre/wheel size

  1. My model of MX-5 is: MK1 Eunos 1992
  2. I’m based near: Hounslow
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: The ideal alloy and tyre size. I currently have 6J x 14, Mazda MX5 Mk2 Rough Silver Finish.

They all need replacing so im considering whether to refurn them with new tyres or get 15" alloys where tyre options are better.

It should have daisy wheels (14"} or option BBS 14" 185/60x14 tyres as standard

If you have power steering you can run 15" no problem

Look for 15x7 wheels, offset 40-45mm, 195/50 15 tyres.

Mk2 15" wheels are a very good choice,

Its going to be hard to find 45mm offset aftermarket wheels; all of the factory 15" wheels for the Mk1 were 45mm, and they are generally rare to find. The Mazda UK distributor put on various 15" wheels that didn’t conform (high 30s offset). Mk2 14" wheels are 45mm offset, but 15" factory Mk2 are 40mm offset.

Weight wise, most aftermarket 15" wheels are “ok” falling into the 14-15lb range. The Mk2 15" wheel is a decent weight at 13lbs, and rare BBS factory are 12lb. The 14" BBS factory is the lightest of them all, but you will have a job finding a complete set with the centres.

I have an original set coming up for sale shortly, centres all present and with new tyres fitted. Anyone interested can PM me or the advert will be up in the next couple of weeks.

Tl;Dr 15’s all the way

The selection for 15s is great I find, for a normal (“normal”) width of 7j ish then my go to was always ps3’s, they used to be 45 a corner from camskill but I haven’t looked in a while but they’re an excellent staple

The selection for wider 15" tyres gets a bit thinner, I’m currently on proxes tr1’s their newer design and so far so good on 225/40(45?)/15
But for track wheels I’m on ao48’s on the 7j ultralageras

If weight is a factor then probably best looking aftermarket, both of my sets are 4.9k a corner before tyres (8j et25 rpf1’s - perfect fitment and 7j ultralageras - look tremendous and have my track tyres on but they don’t look as good fitted due to needing spacers)
