Hi. I’m new on here so hopefully have posted this to the right area. My son has just bought a mk1 and I’m hoping for some advice on rear brakes. How much movement do I expect at the caliper end on the handbrake cable when the lever is pulled up? The handbrake isn’t holding the car although the operation on the lever feels fine. I’ve released the caliper on one side so I can see the cable end - applying the hadnbrake lever moves the cable end maybe 15 mm. Does that sound about right? But not getting any movement of the piston. Just want to check the cable is operating correctly before going to expense of replacing calipers. I was also interested in whether people agree with the Haynes manual which suggests replacement rather than refurb. Many thanks.
How are you adjusting them? Are you slackening the cable off at the lever the adjusting each caliper with the 4mm hex key until the brake locks then backing the adjuster off about 1/4 turn and adjusting the free play at the lever? The movement on the “lever” at each caliper should be about 5-10mm at its tip.

Thanks Robbie. I had it adjusted at a garage so not sure exactly what they did. I’ll go ahead as you describe. Thanks again
