Mk1 J-Limited II Edition. How to verify?

I believe my Mk1 Eunos roadster which I have had for the last 24 years since it imported to be a J-Limited II. Is anyone able to confirm how I can go about verifying this?

You could try https://carvx.jp/ type your chassis number and you can get the info from various Japanese databases. Or if you still have the import documentation it may be on there.

That looks fantastic.

On the surface it certainly appears to be a J2. The black windscreen surround with the distinctive yellow paint distinguishes it from the J1.

It appears to have had a seat upgrade from the original cloth seats as standard, momo wheel and door speakers with tweeters look like they should.

It does indeed have the cloth seats. Those are leather covers over the top of the cloth ones that I had fitted about 20 years back. :slight_smile:

I thought the j2 had a black window surround?

The obvious and easy way to identify a J-Limited II is under the bonnet. Every Eunos Roadster will have a chassis plate with the paint code. For a yellow car, the paint code will be HZ. No other 1.8 Eunos Roadsters came in yellow.

If the paint code is not HZ, its a repainted car. If the chassis number that is stamped into the firewall behind the engine is over stamped at all, I’d be very worried.

On the drivers door shut, there may be a sticker, which might actually list the special edition (but not all do), along with the paint code and interior trim colour code.

There might be an entry under “Special Edition”, or maybe not. The fact that “Special Edition” is on the sticker does not mean the car is a special edition. A lot of buyers have been fooled by dealers selling modified cars saying special editions because the sticker said so. Genuine J-Limited 2s will have seat type STC. Standard high back blackcloth seat cars are STA. If you have a car with STA on the sticker, but adjustable headrest seats, the seats have come out of the scrapyard. STB denotes high back leather.

I don’t have the full VIN range for J-Limited 2s, but they start at NA8C-107350. I doubt they were built sequentially.

That Carvx site is hopeless; it identifies NA8C-107350 as a SR-Limited, which wasn’t built until 1997, and would have had a chassis NA8C-4******.

The online Vin decoders are fast disappearing.

Still functional, but its moot. These records are incomplete. They are quite complete for 1989-92 cars, and 1995+ but are very patchy in between. I think all of them are based on the same dataset.

Autolinkuk sell replica stickers in case its missing or damaged.

Most of the Eunos Roadster special editions were based on the S-Special, so had the suspension upgrades and fancy door trim. The J-Limited 2 was based on the S-Package specced with 14" alloys, which was broadly equivalent to the MX5 1.8iS. The J-Limited 2’s main (only) demarcations from the S-Package was the colour and fitment of European spec seats. Otherwise, the rest is the same.

Other markets, except for North America, got a yellow special edition of some sort during 1993 to 95; the UK got the California. Germany and Switzerland got 550 of what was called the “Sunracer MX5”. Austria got 99 of something just called “Yellow”



Its not clear, but those Austrian cars might have gotten seats with a similar but black, alcantera-style fabric that was also used in the G-Limited.

Note how LHD later Mk1s got the revised dashboard with the passenger airbag compartment. In some markets, this was empty, and was actually an additional storage area.

I’ve read that they came with a seperate headrest

I have seen some extremely thorough repainted cars over the years.

STA: Black Cloth High Back
STB: Tan Leather High Back
STC: Black Cloth, separate head rest (Mazda calls this “low back”)
STE: Recaro (Mazda calls this “Sporty”)
STF: VR Combination A seat, leather (or G-Limited, Mazda duplicated the code)
STG: VR Combination B seat, leather (or R-Limited, Mazda duplicated the code)
STH: R2-Limited seat, leather
STJ: B2-Limited seat, cloth
STK: SR Limited seat. Leather/alcantara combo

Codes apply to 1.8 models only. 1.6 codes are different

The chassis plate has the colour code HZ and the door label shows J-LTD-2 as the Special Edition. I’m delighted to have been able to confirm this. Thank you again for the guidance.

Its great to see another few J Limited 2 examples about.

I have one in my care named “Buttercup” by a previous owner
I was always curious as the V5 says special or something like that. Definitely not jltd2

Having checked the label etc I can say that it has the correct paint. The seats are STD though?

Buttercup has white background on the instruments and the same chequered mats as yours.

Kilometres covered is 185,000 what do you have on yours ?

The white gauges are aftermarket. The chequered mats were a fairly common dealer accessory in Japan.

Certainly looks like a J2, and on the same theme I tried to check my 1991 Jltd, without a lot of success. I have yet to find a JLtd with a door sticker and they don’t seem to be consecutive VIN numbers.
