Hi guys, I’m new here and I am very short on time at the moment due to exams/work, so a quick question for you.
Is there any difference between the mk1 and mk2 regarding hard tops?
I’ve just bought my girlfriend a mk2 MX5 and it leaks, quite a bit! so I think it would be wise to invest in a hard top, but can’t figure out if there’s a different type for each car.
The only difference is the plug connector to the window,on the roof and the roadsters, but it is no hard ship to over come to get it working with an heated rear screen.
Very early Mk 1 roofs never had a heated rear screen.
The seals are different as well. I sold a Mk 1 hard top a couple of years ago on ebay and advertised it as fitting both Mk1 and 2’s. When it was fitted to the buyers Mk2 car they had to buy new seals to ensure it fitted properly. It also had a different connector for the HRS.
The mk2 hardtop I’ve got definitely fits my mk1. Seals are fine - no water getting in (I’ve tested it) and minimal road noise
Waynes hardtops seem to be always swapping between his mk1 and mk2 and there’s never a problem. As has already been said the plug for the HRW is different between the two but is easily rectified
Why get so arcy about something you have little knowledge about. I posted this issue on the old forum http://www.mx5ocforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=68021&highlight= and Geof Walton had previously posted a very informed article about this exact issue. Unfortunately that article has now been lost but if Geof’s still around on the forum I’m sure he will confirm what I said.
My advice to anyone itting a Mk1 hood to a Mk2 is to try it before you buy it.
“It is quite possible that the problem of badly fitting seals can be fixed by altering the position of the window glass. It can be moved up/down, in/out and forwards/backwards by removing the door card and adjusting various bolts and stops. See a manual for details. Must be worth a try.” _________________ Pete
What…,this is an option, but if it fitted with the soft top then it will be fine with the hard top.
“I’ve just sold my hardtop on Ebay and unfortunately discovered that there are significant differences between Mk1 and Mk2 hardtops with a major cost factor if you get it wrong.
My buyer travelled from Scotland and after I fitted the hardtop there appeared to be slight gaps around a part of the door on the passenger side (drivers side was fine). Anyway due to time she left and intended to address the issue at home. She has now taken it down to her local Mazda dealer and she needs to change the seals in order to make it fit (at quite an expense).
The strange thing is that the heated window connector fitted my mk1 and also my mk2 but doesn’t fit her 2.5 (So I wonder if the previous keeper of mine also had a mk 1 roof on it at some stage).
Anyway this is just to let people be aware when buying and selling hardtops that roofs are not fully interchangeable as many people advocate. Hope this assists somebody but the lady that bought mine has been extremely good about the matter. (No sermons on buyer beware please ) Bad info I have since found this from the tech archives that GWalton posted http://www.mx5ocforum.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=63884 _________________ 1/2 a Mk2 2000 Icon (wife owns the other 1/2)”
Sounds like a typical main dealers, lets get some money out of you, they ARE FULLY INTERCHANGABLE from a Mk 1 to a 2.5 just the plug and socket are different, there are adjustments that you need to do when moving from one mx/roadster to another…side and windscreen frame latches and the hanger points need to be loosened up by way off unscrewing the phillips head screws and hinge it open to reveal the two 12mm head bolts that need to be slackened off so they fit the frankenstein bolts and then just adjust and re-tighten everything back up to the new mx/roadster,this will only need to be done the once unless you move it over to another.
Good info
Well i am shocked at your knowledge, and i must be wrong after 20 odd years of working on them.
Chris check your roof mate it does not fit on yours straight of a Mk 2/2.5, it is just your imagination that it’s safe and fits, and i’ll sort your plug connection out if we can get it to fit?
In addition, in the UK, there were two completely different tops supplied by Mazda; Mazda Cars Ltd used to supply a hardtop made by TWR, which shares no parts with the factory roof.
There are several different aftermarket tops as well, including 2 UK made items (5Hive and Moss), which have a simlar appearance to the factory top.
