mk1 mx5 1.8 mpg?

Hi there,

I have a mk1 1.8 mx5 and im not too sure but i think im getting poor mpg. I only run around local roads so not much motorway or dual carriage way driving.  I fill up which is around 40 litres and I can only go 200 miles on that. This seems like there may be an issue but please let me know what ur 5’s are doing and what things can I look out for on my car. Many thanks.

22 mpg seems pretty poor, I get over 30 mpg from my supercharged Mk1 1.6, and I am not known for pussy footing around—

 30 MPG for 1.8 MK2, MK2½ and 2.0 MK3.

something is wrong - i can get 200 miles out of 30 litres without too much trouble.

First of all you need to calculate your consumption on a brim-to-brim basis and check for 2 or 3 consecutive tanks full to determine if the results are consistent.

Fuel consumption is subjective. It depends where you drive (hilly or flat roads, short or long journeys) and of course how you drive.

On very short journeys (5 mile round trip from cold start) in the hilly Pennines I only managed 22mpg at the beginning of this year. Having the fuel injectors ultrasonically cleaned and fitting a new O2 sensor, along with an increase in ambient temperatures recently has seen the average for the same kind of journeys rise to 26mpg. I can easily get over 30mpg if I throw in some motorway/dual carriageway use on longer journeys.

Things to check:

  • Brakes binding
  • Engine coolant temperature sensor
  • O2 sensor
  • Fuel injector flow and spray pattern

i boot mine around and average 28mpg

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, I will have a look at those things u mentioned and try and get it sorted out.

Probably the best answer you’ll get re. fuel consumption.

Hi, have been running a 1998 Berkeley for over 6 yrs & have kept a log of all fuel used. Without getting too detailed over it I can say that mine has been giving an overall of just over 29mpg. Regular servicing- regular blast outs- seems to do the trick!!
