Mk1 MX5 Boot Seal Leaks

I’ve traced a leak into the boot of my Mk1 from a section of the boot seal, after eliminating a failed rain rail and light seal, on the near side, inboard of the rear light.

The seal itself isn’t split or anything, so I assume its lost a bit of shape at that spot. No leaking anywhere else. Has anyone just refitted the seal in a different spot, so the iff spot is, say, just above the number plate? I’m assuming water coming off the forward side of the boot lid is draining away in the gulleys just abouve the rear lights, and that the seal above the number plate isn’t doing all that much. A new seal from Mazda etc is a fairly hefty £60-70.

Dry the area and remove the trim. Dust the area with talcum powder and it will show the exact water track after the next rain

Didn’t need to do that. With a hose I can see exactly where the leak it. As per photos.

If it comes to the bit, they might be useful Saz.

Yes, I was hoping someone might have found something generic.

“Scientific” checks with French chalk were quite illuminating.

Semi-quantitative because its difficult to evenly distribute the chalk on the seal.

Subjectively, less chalk seemed to be deposited on the passenger side (the leaking side) than the drivers side (no leaks). You can see a hint of something going on here:

Check the impression left by the seal. Its wobbly.

And towards the rear of the care, hardly any contact with the seal.

You can see the wobble in the seal

Opposite side, perfectly straight

And as a whole

Bootlid doesn’t look twisted

Grease test with the rubber stoppers showed the boot lid is straight

Lifting the seal, to check the metalwork showed it was all straight on both sides. Ergo the seal is rolling over.

Another thought, I have a Rod Millen boot spoiler (wish I never had it tbh). The boot lid torsen bars have been adjusted to stop the boot lid falling on my head (even so, its marginal). I wonder if this leads to side effect in the locked position?

Your picture does show the boot lid is slightly high on the left (pic 7 of 10)

Deceptive photo, I will remove it. The stoppers contact evenly as I said.

I’ve had this car for 16 years. Its only started leaking in the last few month or so.
