MK1 NA buying advice

Hi all!

I’m looking to view this NA tomorrow and I’m just wondering what your thoughts are on this particular example?

It looks very clean on the photos and is nearly stock which is what I’m looking for. Current owner has been maintaining it as they are an ex mechanic.

Any advice is much appreciated!

Looks very clean, but, there are no pictures of underneath.
The tyres do not match and are budget ones.
The rear discs/callipers look past their best.
The MOT history is worth a look. It shows it has not been used for a few years and shows corrosion advisories in the past.
Go with your eyes wide open and spend most of your time underneath.
Good luck.

Thanks for the reply Malc! I’ll be sure to give the underneath a good poke around.

Regarding the MOT history I am curious about this:

Nearside Front Suspension component mounting prescribed area is distorted but not considered excessive (2.4.A.3)

The owner has reported no repairs being carried out so I wonder if this is down to corrosion? The wording leads me to believe accident damage but I could be wrong

Loads of overspray on the front. Rear has the wrong Roadster rear badge; they stuck on one for a 1.8 model. Boot lid is not original; its for a UK car, as its missing the high level brake light. Distorted rear bumper. Overspray on the front, messed around body work on the rear. Its been someone’s project car. Red photographs well. I suspect the paint is mostly new. If there is suspicion its had a rear hit, lift the boot carpet and check for damage to the boot floor.

The car might be alright, but I’m not sure its worth anywhere near the asking price. Its not in original condition, likely has had accident repairs. But its an old car.

Thank you for the reply! Sadly the buyer pulled out due to my concerns for the lack of documented history. Those are all fantastic call outs which I’ll keep an eye out for on future cars.

What would you say is the going rate for these cars at the moment?

Hello Shaun
I am also looking for a mark1/Eunos roadster. Prices seem to vary but your budget should get you a good one. I was very interested in a Eunos owned by an mx5oc member but he decided not to sell after I spent some time investigating the viability of dealing with corrosion. It was a shame because I was actually really keen on the car. You’ve just got to keep looking. Loads are coming up for sale now.

£2-3k for average condition cars
£3-4k for cars with well repaired sills

Garage queens; the sky is the limit in the heads of some sellers, but I think values are softening.

For £6k, I expect a very good car; not necessarily original paint, but it should be well presented.

Don’t pay over the odds for a so-called limited edition.

I saw this a few weeks ago by chance - I was passing MX5 City and had a quick look.

Almost a new car - or as new as a 30-year-old MK1 can be.

I think you’d need to have a very specific use case for it to make even a reomtely sensible buy - probaby just driving to summer shows and entering concours events.
