mk1 na import water water in boot

hi everyone.

i have recently started to look after my stepdads 1989 eunos roadster, with regards to maintenance, repairs, also making improvements and sorting things that have been neglected over the years.

so anyway to the point. we have had a couple of issues with water. the first being wet carpets and sloshing sills. i have now sorted this. the second is the one in question.

so i went to put something in the boot and found that the spare wheel was full of water. started to look into it by checking rain rail with a jug of water but found that water was dripping through the zip on the rear window on the roof. this is then dripping onto the parcel shelf and through the big hole above the spare wheel.

my question is has anyone had this and whats the best/ easiest fix?

Firstly there should be a plate on the rear shelf.  Secondly water proof the zip by rubbing a candle over it. this also helps with un zipping and zipping up. Also make sure the stitching around the zip is not coming apart.  If you need a plate contact autolink, www.autolinkuk.co.uk  and welcome to the forum.

thanks for that will try the candle. what sort of plate should be over the hole? dont think it was from stitching as it was dripping from the zip head in the middle. but will check anyway.

any other bits that are common on the model that i should check or be aware of or any other tips i should be made aware of?

also thanks for the welcome.

update : turns out the hole that is above the spare wheel was cut out using a cutting disc am going to have to cut and shape some metal to re cover the hole.

You could check the rear deck plates. If it’s just in the spare wheel then could be dripping from there. If other parts of the boot are wet then it could also come from leaking rear light seals or aeriel seal. It’s a process of elimination really. If you reckon it’s only dripping from that zip then great, but I would lift the rear shelf carpet then re check the rain rail isn’t leaking, you’ll soon find out when you pour more water around the hood. BTW if you’ve had a leak in there anyway you need the carpet lifting as under there can start to wiff if it’s left damp, needs to dry out.

i poured quite alot of water anyway when finding the zip leak. enough to have shown a leak in the rain rail. luckily the spare wheel caught the majority of the water the "bulkhead carpet is only wet in a small patch below where the zip was leaking, also directly above the wheel. nowhere else is wet

While you are at it check the drain tubes. Yes You will need to make a cover.

I’ve heard a bit about the drain tubes, how do you check if they are OK?.

if thats the holes in the bottom of the sills. I already did that to cure the sloshing sills

If you still find the boot carpets are wet after doing the above it might be the rubber seals between the rear light fittings and the bodywork have perished.

My Mk1 boot carpets were very wet and replacing the rubber seals was the solution, round about a tenner a piece from MX5 parts.

I’ve just re-read your initial entry and it appears that you say you had fixed the wet mats - doh!

The drain tubes start just behind the seat belt pillers, there is a flap of carpet, lift and feel for any wet.

If they are blocked you will feel water in the gully.  The screw in original aerial is ideal for cleaning them out. They exit the body just in front of the rear wheels.

This was a fault with a particular budget hood. The zip follows the window line instead of how mazda designed it. Only permanent fix may be decent hood.
