My 1990 Mk1 has developed an oil leak from the housing bolted to the end of the left hand cam cover.
There are electrical connectors coming from this housing(along with the oil.!!)
My question is what is the device and how easy is it to remove and replace what I assume is an oil seal behind it.

That will be the Cam Angle Sensor O Ring. You need to mark its position before removing the CAS and replace the O ring, probably worth doing the cam cover gasket at the same time as that needs to come off.

Yes it can but I found it a lot easier to re-locate the cam cog with the Cam-Cover off. Well worth the extra cost of the new gasket.
